Assessment of Growth Factors, Cytokines, and Cellular Markers in Saliva of Patients with Trigeminal Neuralgia

Abstract: We proposed to perform a comparative analysis of growth factors, cytokines, and chemokine receptors on the salivary cells in the saliva obtained from trigeminal neuralgia (TN) and normal subjects. Saliva was collected from TN and healthy subjects. Salivary cells were isolated by centrifugation. The expression of the cell surface marker was analyzed by flow cytometry. A cytometric bead array was done to measure the levels of cytokines and growth factors on the flow cytometer. Saliva from TN subjects showed lowe… Show more

“…Recent studies have explored the relationship between inflammation and trigeminal neuralgia, specifically showing increased levels of inflammatory markers in those with trigeminal neuralgia compared to healthy controls [ 19 ]. In addition, certain pro-inflammatory cytokines, like TNF-a, IL-17, and IL-6, were also found to be elevated in the saliva of trigeminal neuralgia patients compared to controls [ 20 ]. Although further research is needed to confirm this connection, it is a possible explanation for trigeminal neuralgia in this patient.…”

“…Under these circumstances, it can also be accompanied by neuropathic pain (Zhou et al 2016). Mechanistically, the intensity of hyperalgesia correlates here with the increased production of inflammatory mediators, including IL-6 (Patil and Testarelli 2021). This production can be reduced, for example, by cannabinoids and/or flavonoids, with a therapeutically relevant effect, i.e.…”
