Assessment of groundwater salinity and risk of soil degradation in Quaternary aquifer system. Example: Annaba plain, Algeria N-E

Abstract: Quality of water resources in Annaba plain (North East) of Algeria is facing a serious challenge due to industrialisation and excessive exploitation of water. Therefore, 29 groundwater samples were collected from this area to assess their hydrogeochemistry and suitability for irrigation purposes. The groundwater samples were analysed for distribution of chemical elements Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+, K+, HCO3−, Cl−, and SO42−. It also includes pH, electrical conductivity. The hydrochimical study has shown that the facieses … Show more

“…Irrigation plays a dominant role in agriculture because of degrading water resources and variant distribution of the rainfalls. Farmers need to save water and make judicious use of it, especially during the dry season [HALIMI et al 2017;ZARE et al 2014]. When the concentration of soluble Na + ions in the soil is high, these ions replace the Ca 2+ cations (basic exchanges) in the absorbing complex; this can be induced by salt-loaded water; this risk is determined by the measurement of sodium absorption ratio (SAR) [GOUAIDIA et al 2013].…”

“…Losing soil particles from the agricultural fields causes destruction of the soil cover, reducing its thickness and depleting its richness of fertile components and thus contributing to the deterioration of agricultural production efficiency [CHADWICK, CHEN 2002;HALIMI et al 2018;HEJ-DUK et al 2017;KOWALCZYK et al 2014;NEARING et al 2005;PÄRN, MANDER 2007;QUINTON et al 1999;SMO-ROŃ, KOWALCZYK 2012;VAGSTAD et al 2001]. This phenomenon, especially in undulating loess areas, presents a significant economic problem and causes high environ-mental degradation.…”
