In order to evaluate the state of groundwater salination by seawater intrusion on the Lebanese coast, the region of Choueifat-Rmeyle, situated in the south of Mount-Lebanon, was chosen as a study zone. Overall, six wells were chosen and water sampling was done for three years starting from 1999 till 2002. Sampling was done on a monthly basis for ten months per year, from July till April. A complete physico-chemical analysis was done for all the water samples taken. Seawater intrusion in the Choueifat-Rmeyle region was studied through the interrelations between the chemical and physical constituents of groundwater. Results showed that the regions of Choueifat, Jiye and Rmeyle were subject to seawater intrusion. This intrusion was directly and simultaneously related to the pumping period and intensity but weakly linked to the quantity of rainfall. It was also related to the geologic nature of the study area. Furthermore, the actual intrusion in the study zone increases the already existing salinity problems. The salinity rates of wells water oscillated between 0.7 dS/m and 5.5 dS/m with the majority above 2 dS/m. This is leading to intolerable levels of water and soil salinity, inadequate for the cultivation of many crops, thus threatening their growth and production and reducing the agrodiversity in the region.

The Lebanese coast is highly subject to seawater intrusion and groundwater deterioration. The study is carried out in Byblos district (Jbeil Caza) 35 km north of Beirut. It aims to investigate the seawater intrusion, to determine the regional water balance of the region and finally to estimate the economic value of that water for agricultural use. The monitoring of the aquifer was achieved through samples from different wells chosen randomly. As for the regional water balance, it was determined with use of a GIS model. The economic evaluation was carried out, using the contingent valuation method to estimate the willingness to pay of farmers to contribute to the improvement of groundwater quality; two alternative scenarios were proposed and compared with the current situation. The annual regional water balance is positive, which means that the region is rich in water. The monitoring results show that the coastal part of the region is slightly contaminated by seawater intrusion due to the excess of pumping from the aquifer. The economic evaluation estimated that farmers would contribute by 102 US$ yr −1 for the first proposal and 166.67 US$ yr −1 for the second.

Seawater intrusion is one of the alarming processes that reduces the water quality and imperils the supply of freshwater in coastal aquifers. The region, north of the Chennai city, India is one such site affected by seawater intrusion. The objective of this study is to identify the extent of seawater intruded area by major geochemical and isotopic signatures. A total of 102 groundwater samples were collected and analysed for major and minor ions. Groundwater samples with electrical conductivity (EC) greater than 5000 μS/cm and a river mouth sample were analyzed for Oxygen-18 (δ 18 O) and Deuterium (δ 2 H) isotopes to study their importance in monitoring seawater intrusion. The molar ratio of geochemical indicators and isotopic signatures suggests an intrusion up to a distance of 13 km from the sea as on March 2012 and up to 14.7 km during May 2012.
