Assessment of genotoxicity and depuration of anthracene in the juvenile coastal fish Trachinotus carolinus using the comet assay

Abstract: A B S T R A C TIn the environment, anthracene is characterized as being persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic to aquatic organisms. Biotransformation of xenobiotic substances, such as anthracene, produces reactive oxygen species that may induce DNA strand breaks. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the DNA damage in juvenile T. carolinus exposed to different concentrations (8, 16 and 32 µg.L -1 ) of anthracene for 24 h in the dark then subsequently allowed to depurate in clean water for different peri… Show more

“…The genotoxicity may be reduced when the organism is exposed to low concentrations of hydrocarbons (Hasue et al 2013). Furthermore, different periods of time are necessary for normalization of the ENA frequency, which is dependent on the cellular renewal process and capability of hematopoietic tissue to produce normal erythrocytes that may be detected in the peripheral blood.…”

“…This kind of information can be applied in studies of xenobiotic effects (Hasue et al 2013), and in ecological risk assessments (US EPA 1998). Therefore, in this study, genetic and hematologic endpoints were measured in fish after exposure and depuration periods to determine if damage induced by WSFG was reversed.…”

“…Additionally, the use of a procedural control to test the effect of ethanol would have required the sacrifice of more healthy colonies. In other toxicological assays, using ethanol does not appear to have an effect on the coral response (Hasue et al 2013); however, we are aware that the response of the coral to anthracene in this experiment could be caused by a combined effect of anthracene and the ethanol.…”
