“…Varios autores informaron que esta sustancia causa daño genético in vivo e in vitro porque mostró resultados positivos al evaluarla con diferentes sistemas, como los ensayos de aberraciones cromosómicas, de micronúcleos, de mutagénesis e incluso con el ensayo cometa. Sin embargo, su potencial mutagénico y carcinogénico continúa siendo controversial (Stachetti et al 1998, Rahman et al 2002.…”

“…This type of mutagenesis assay detects the ability of compounds to interact with alkali-labile DNA sites and induce DNA strand breaks. Rahman et al (2002) treated mice orally with single doses of chlorpyrifos ranging from 0.28 to 8.96 mg/kg. In blood leukocytes dose-dependent increases of comet tail length were seen after 24 h. These changes decreased after 48 and 72 h and disappeared after 96 h. The authors discuss formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) as a possible mechanism responsible for DNA damage, as numerous studies have shown that chlorpyrifos increases indicators of oxidative stress or leads to oxidative damage to various tissues or cells (Oncu et al, 2002;Verma and Srivastava, 2003;Wielgomas and Krechniak, 2007).…”

“…On the other hand, Carver et al (1985) showed that acephate did not induce CAs, SCE or MN in mouse bone marrow cells. After the treatment with acephate, Rahman et al (2002) observed a significant increase in mean comet tail length indicating DNA damage in vivo in mouse lymphocytes in comparison to control. The damage was concentration related.…”

“…Chromosomal aberrations, SCE and micronucleus analysis of human lymphocytes as well as single cell gel electrophoresis (SCGE) or ''comet'' assay are used as the most rapid, sensitive and useful assays to detect the potential genotoxicity of chemicals (Rahman et al 2002;Ç elik et al 2004;Yüzbaşıoglu et al 2006Yüzbaşıoglu et al , 2008Yılmaz et al 2008). They have been considered to be the markers of early biological effects of carcinogen exposure (Liou et al 2002).…”
