Assessment of gait dynamics in rats submitted to limb ischemia

Abstract: PURPOSE:To describe a method for the assessment of gait dynamics in rats submitted to limb ischemia. METHODS: Twenty-four male Wistar rats (150-160g) were used. Twelve animals were submitted to limb ischemia by ligation of the common left iliac artery (ischemic group: n = 12); and a sham-operated group was used as control (n=12). After a recovery period of 6 weeks, gait dynamics was assessed by counting the complete footprints and the number of hindlimb-floor contacts during a treadmill test for five minutes a… Show more

“…All animals were accustomed to running on a rodent treadmill for 10 min per day for three days at a moderate level (10 m min −1 to 12 m min −1 ; 12 degree gradient), as described previously. 14 Bilateral femoral arteries were ligated, and the jugular vein catheter was inserted on day 4 as described above. After two days of rest, rats were accustomed to a rodent treadmill for 3 min per day for four days (10 m min −1 to 12 m min −1 ; 12 degree gradient), followed by two days of rest.…”

“…5,6 Gait biomechanics was altered in rats submitted to limb ischemia. 7 However, no study used analysis of gait biomechanics as a parameter of evaluation of the effect of pentoxifylline and cilostazol on IC.…”
