Background: Septoplasty is considered the definitive treatment for symptomatic patients with deviated nasal septum. Although septoplasty is a commonly successful performed surgery, it has also been found to affect patients’ quality of life (QoL). The Glasgow Benefit Inventory (GBI) scale is a validated questionnaire used to assess satisfaction after treatment. Objective: The present study was conducted with the aim to assess the outcome of septoplasty using the GBI scale. Methods: A retrospective study was conducted among patients with chronic nasal obstruction in Dr. Sulaiman Alhabib Hospital, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, to assess the outcome of septoplasty using the GBI. All patients who met the eligibility criteria were subjected to a detailed otorhinolaryngology, head and neck examination, including nasal endoscopy prior to septoplasty, followed by the distribution of a previously validated questionnaire translated into Arabic. Statistical analysis was performed using R version 3.6.3 software. Counts and percentages were used to summarize the distribution of categorical variables. Results: A total of 75 patients were enrolled in the study initially, among which 42 patients met the eligibility criteria; 65% were male and 35% were female. Most respondents reported improvement in the total GBI score (92.5%, n = 40). A similar improvement was observed in the general subscale domain (92.5%, n = 40) as compared to the social support domain (66.7%, n = 28) and physical health domain (66.7%, n = 28), which showed less improvement. Conclusion: We found a positive change in the QoL among the patients after septoplasty using a validated and reliable instrument.

Background: The purpose was to evaluate the role and impact of the rhinoplasty outcome evaluation (ROE) in rhinoplasty. Objectives: To systematically review the ability of ROE to assess rhinoplasty outcome in the very recent surgical approaches. Data Sources: Searching MESH terms “rhinoplasty” and “rhinoplasty and ROE” on PubMed, Scopus, Embase, Google Scholar, and other major literature databases. Study Eligibility Criteria: A Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses model was adopted for eligibility criteria. Participants and Interventions: A first large screening on 1,660 papers allowed the final retrieval of 896 reports, of which only 101 were eligible for all the inclusion criteria, which allowed finally to select a group of 12 reports published in the time range 2018–2021. Study Appraisal and Synthesis Methods: Meta-regression with Durbin–Watson test, checking of meta-analysis bias with Rosenthal’s estimator, and heterogeneity through the I 2 statistics were performed. The analysis included a Mantel–Haenszel test and associated or meta-analysis. Results: Twelve eligible and qualified papers were included in the meta-analysis, out of 1,263 patients, from 1,660 papers. ROE confirmed previous reports about its ability to discriminate preoperative from postoperative outcome (50/100), as from the different rhinoplasty approaches, a value very close to the functional Nasal Obstruction Symptom Evaluation scale. This study strengthens the role of ROE in the evaluation of rhinoplasty outcomes encouraging further research to improve ROE scale on different cultural habits and geographical areas. Limitations: The main limitations were due to the weak inclusion and exclusion criteria, methodological flaws with the statistical analysis, and poor data synthesis and evaluation in many papers about ROE.

In the evaluation after septorhinoplasty (SRP), the surgeon's plan and the patient's expectations may not always be realised. Therefore, in our prospective case-control study, we aimed to investigate whether the Sinonasal Outcome Test (SNOT-22) and Nasal Obstruction Symptom Evaluation Scales (NOSE), which have been validated in different patient populations in Turkish, are appropriate for evaluating SRP cases and their relationship with each other. Preoperative and postoperative data of NOSE and SNOT-22 questionnaires of 125 cases diagnosed with traumatic septum deviation and external nasal deformity and decided to be operated were analyzed. It was calculated that the SNOT-22 score of those with high/low preoperative NOSE scores was also high/low with a 53.6% probability and that the SNOT-22 score of those with high/low postoperative NOSE scores was also high/low with a 69.9% probability, indicating a positive and high-level relationship between postoperative NOSE and SNOT-22 measurements. When the answers given to all questions in SNOT-22 were evaluated separately, it was observed that the most disturbing symptoms of the cases were nasal obstruction at 78.4% and the need to blow the nose at 46.4% in the preoperative period, and nasal obstruction with 64.8% and the need to blow nose with 37.6% in the postoperative period. The most dramatic changes in the answers to SNOT-22 questions were observed in the patient's feelings of frustrated/restless/irritable, sadness, and embrassed. SNOT-22 and NOSE questionnaires can be used interchangeably to evaluate the functional status of patients undergoing SRP surgery.
