“…Many researchers have reported on the optimal number of needle passes for diagnostic accuracy in FNAB. 4,34,39 The Bethesda conference 34 suggested that between 2 and 5 passes are reasonable, and Musgrave et al 39 emphasized that four needle passes at different regions could decrease nondiagnostic results. Although many needle passes may result in a decrease in inadequacy, the routine use of at least four needle passes per nodule can be too much for some patients because it can cause discomfort or complications.…”

“…It is possible that the small number of needle passages used by both groups of examiners to evaluate each nodule further contributed to the high rate of nondiagnostic reports in this study. Musgrave et al observed that 16% of samples collected from a single passage in the central area of a nodule are inadequate, compared with inadequacy rates of 5.3%, 4%, and 2.6% for samples collected from 2 eccentric passages, 3 passages, or 4 passages, respectively. These findings suggest that surgeons could add more passages per nodule in an attempt to increase their initial outcomes with ultrasound‐guided FNA.…”

“…A PAAF, como tentativa de obter tal seletividade, aliada à avaliação clínica, tem alcançado destaque realmente importante [13][14][15][16][17][18] . O método em referência teve início na década de 50, com Soderstrom, estabelecendo-se definitivamente como meio de escolha diagnóstica com os trabalhos de Lowhagen e Van Herle 1,11,19 .…”
