Assessment of fetal cardiac morphology and functional changes in early‐onset and late‐onset fetal growth restriction

Abstract: Objective To compare the fetal cardiac morphology and functions of early‐onset fetal growth restriction (EO‐FGR) and late‐onset fetal growth restriction (LO‐FGR) groups with gestational weeks‐matched controls. Methods A total of 164 pregnant women were included, 28 of whom were in the EO‐FGR group, 54 in the LO‐FGR group, and 82 in the control group. Fetal echocardiographic evaluation was performed with two‐dimensional, M‐mode, tissue Doppler imaging (TDI), and pulsed wave Doppler. Results Fetal cardiac morpho… Show more

“…IVCT is the most stable parameter of MPI 10 . Reduced E/A ratios and increased MPI values in IUGR fetuses have been demonstrated in the literature [17][18][19] . Interestingly, some studies found higher left ventricular MPI values and higher E/A ratios in fetuses with PPROM with microbial invasion of the amniotic cavity and with signs of fetal inflammatory response syndrome 20,21 .…”

“…This ratio can be used to evaluate ventricle compliance and relaxation by indicating whether ventricle filling is early-diastolic by negative pressure or late-diastolic by atrial contractile force. 12,13 Myocardial performance index (MPI or Tei index) was calculated using pulsed wave Doppler ultrasonography. To calculate MPI, position the caliper on the medial wall of the ascending aorta using a 5-chamber view of the heart that displays both the mitral and aortic valves in the same view (Figure 4).…”
