Assessment of Environmental Pollution in Cement Plant Areas in Romania by Co-Processing Waste in Clinker Kilns

Abstract: Worldwide, in the rotary kilns of cement plants, various amounts of combustible waste are burned, which would otherwise end up in municipal landfills. The paper first analyzes the literature on the co-processing of waste in cement manufacture and its influence on the environment and human health. Then, it shows how the combustion components of co-processed waste can influence the final characteristics of clinker and cement. The main objective of the paper is to determine the level of emissions of the resulting… Show more

“…These adverse effects could be transmitted to humans by direct (air inhalation) and indirect ways (distribution in soil, water, etc.). According to the literature, respiratory, gastrointestinal, lymphatic, and central nervous system impairments are the most reported health issues caused by the aforementioned pollutants [16,31,33,34]. Figure 2 describes the drawbacks of cement complexes dealing with environmental prob-lems.…”

“…Meanwhile, applying fossil fuels has been assumed as a critical resource for environmental pollution via emitting greenhouse gasses and heavy metals (e.g., mercury, lead, and cadmium) into the atmosphere. Hence, global warming issues and ecologically sustainable development suggest recycling the applied fossil fuels or substituting them with alternative ones [16,32,55,56].…”

“…Not only is it safe and efficient, but also has high detection accuracy [14]. Machine vision inspection technology is composed of three aspects: image acquisition, software image processing, and image analysis [15][16][17]. The image acquisition part is mainly to select a suitable light source, professional camera, and lens to realize the picture acquisition of the sample.…”

“…Other sources of pollutant emissions also influence the concentration of pollutants in the air, including road transport emitting particles from tire wear [25], heating systems and thermal power plants emitting particulates and toxic gases [26], cement industry [27], field work (plowing, harvesting), biomass transport [28] and open pit coal mines emitting dust and gases [29].…”
