Assessment of emotional functioning in brain-impaired individuals.

Abstract: The subject of emotional functioning following brain damage has been broadly considered. This article leads with a description of emotional functioning as it is commonly considered relative to brain damage. Two basic models are presented, each varying in terms of the degree to which a strict brain-behavior relationship is maintained. Methodological concerns inherent in this body of literature are highlighted. Modification of variables and analyses are considered in terms of reporting sources, longitudinal desi… Show more

“…In fact, the prevalences of impaired performance obtained in the present study using the ST-LNNB and SILS screening instruments (0.09 and 0.22, respectively) are somewhat lower than the 0.34-0.50 prevalences found in previous studies (e.g. Such refinements should be based upon the current theoretical and methodological advances in the field of neuropsychology (see Nelson & Cicchetti, 1995;Prigatano, Parsons & Bortz, 1995). Secondly, the present study utilized global measures of substance use.…”

“…Similar patterns have been shown to characterize AUC as well (Cumming 2000a; McPherson, Jetz & Rogers 2004). Instability at extremely low or high levels of prevalence seems to be inherent in any model with low number of cases in one of the cells of the confusion matrix (Nelson & Cicchetti 1995).…”

“…Further research is needed to ascertain the factors related to the utility of the particular screening instruments employed in this study for similar populations. Such refinements should be based upon the current theoretical and methodological advances in the field of neuropsychology (see Nelson & Cicchetti, 1995;Prigatano, Parsons & Bortz, 1995).…”
