Assessment of Eccentric Exercise-Induced Oxidative Stress Using Oxidation-Reduction Potential Markers

Abstract: The aim of the present study was to investigate the use of static (sORP) and capacity ORP (cORP) oxidation-reduction potential markers as measured by the RedoxSYS Diagnostic System in plasma, for assessing eccentric exercise-induced oxidative stress. Nineteen volunteers performed eccentric exercise with the knee extensors. Blood was collected before, immediately after exercise, and 24, 48, and 72 h after exercise. Moreover, common redox biomarkers were measured, which were protein carbonyls, thiobarbituric aci… Show more

“…Recently, a novel technology based on a galvanostatic measure of electrons has been developed that easily and readily measures ORP -the MiOXSYS System (Figure 2). This system has been used to assess changes in oxidative stress in trauma patients and as a function of extreme exercise [Rael et al 2007[Rael et al , 2009Stagos et al 2015aStagos et al , 2015b. Data from the MiOXSYS System are presented in static ORP measures (sORP), with static referring to the passive or current state of activity between oxidants and antioxidants.…”

“…These two novel markers have been used previously in several of our studies for assessing exercise-induced oxidative stress [7][8][9]45]. The above correlations were meaningful, since sORP increased values correspond to higher oxidative stress levels, as it represents the integrated balance of oxidants and reductants, while cORP is a measure of antioxidant reserve available in the body's system.…”

“…For the determination of oxidative stress levels after exercise, a number of oxidative stress markers are assessed such as the levels and activity of antioxidant enzymes and molecules, oxidative DNA damage, lipid peroxidation and protein oxidation [7][8][9] Regarding protein oxidation, it is usually assessed by measuring protein carbonyl levels (PC) in plasma. The most abundant protein in plasma (about 50% of total protein) is human serum albumin (HSA) [10].…”
