Assessment of drought conditions using HJ-1A/1B data: a case study of Potohar region, Pakistan

Abstract: Drought is a natural disaster which causes global damages and affects people. In this work, a comparative study of different drought indices such as Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Deviation NDVI (DevNDVI), Vegetation Condition Index (VCI) and Temperature Condition Index (TCI) from HJ-1A/1B multispectral data is discussed. These indices have shown potential to detect the drought severity. The objective of this study is to monitor drought in the Potohar region using HJ-1A/1B satellite data, from … Show more

“…Drought is a complex phenomenon that can have considerable impact on agriculture, society, and ecosystems (Ionita et al 2016;Aziz et al 2018). Drought can be divided broadly into one of four types: (a) meteorological, (b) hydrological, (c) agricultural, and (d) socioeconomic (Kao and Govindaraju 2010).…”

“…Identifying and understanding the land use dynamics in the study area are essential to minimize evaluation errors as mentioned above. For instance, in our study area that was dominated by pastureland, changes in vegetative vigor might also have been related to drought [ 58 ], use of herbicides [ 59 ], and grazing [ 60 , 61 ]. Therefore, we overlaid the pixels showing the lowest NDVI values of 12 April 2012, with the respective in situ temperatures (measured on January 2012 at 10 cm depth), as shown in Figure 8…”

“…Agricultural drought is considered one of the most important types of drought across the globe, which affects food security, economy and social stability. Therefore, proper mapping and monitoring of this disaster is the need of the day (Aziz et al, 2018; Johnson & Gleick, 2008; Wilhite & Buchanan‐Smith, 2005). Because of changes in precipitation and rise in temperature, agricultural drought reduces the profitability of harvests (Amin et al, 2020).…”
