“…The study showed that there was a significant increase in deletions of 4977 bp in mitochondrial DNA of the chronic renal patients in relation to the controls, due to the existence of factors that promoted genomic instability, leading to the occurrence of mutation. Kan et al (2002), using the Comet assay, carried out a study on DNA damage in chronic renal patients kept on HD and found a significant increase in the number of DNA breaks. However, they did not find a positive correlation between the duration (3.5 years) of hD treatment and the DNA damage that was found in the study of Stopper et al (2001), using the Comet assay in lymphocytes.…”
