“…And all FI of Com.2 were higher than that of Com.1, indicating that tyrosine protein-like substances presented the main abundant compounds of released matters, the same results could be found in previous literature [14]. As the protein-like substances in DOMs must be released from either EPSs or intracellular materials, and were relatively easy to be biodegraded [42,45], the pretreatment methods applied, especially the integration method, were efficient for WAS hydrolysis, which closely related to WAS acidification.…”

“…Component C4 (λex/λem= <240/340 and 295/340) was relatively rarely reported in published literature and it was mainly associated with amino acids and biologically labile matter produced in aquatic environments [42,44,47]. Finally, protein and tryptophan-like fluorescing compounds observed in prior studies are associated with components C5 (λex/λem= <240/330 and 275/330) [18,[42][43][44]48]. …”

“…PARAFAC enables the mathematical separation of chemically independent, but spectrally overlapping fluorescence components, allowing a much more quantitative analysis of EEM data than by merely visual inspection. EEM-PARAFAC has proved a suitable approach for identifying the major foulants in tertiary filtration, monitoring removal of organic matter across drinking water plant and water recycling plant, and characterizing the interactions between dissolved organic matter and trace metals (Yamashita and Jaffé, 2008;Hambly et al, 2010;Henderson et al, 2011;Sanchez et al, 2013). All of these applications above indicated the robustness of this tool in tracing subtle changes of organic components in aquatic system.…”
