Assessment of Disease Activity in Ulcerative Colitis by Faecal Calprotectin, a Novel Granulocyte Marker Protein

Abstract: This study comprised 62 outpatients with ulcerative colitis who underwent 64 colonoscopies. The disease activity was evaluated according to endoscopic and histological criteria. The results revealed a significant correlation between both the endoscopic as well as the histological gradings of disease activity and faecal calprotectin. The median faecal calprotectin levels in the control group (6 mg/l) and in the patients with no or low disease activity (11.5 mg/l) were significantly different (p < 0.0001). The m… Show more

“…Increased calprotectin concentrations that correlated with the endoscopic-histological grading of intestinal inflammation were detected in adults and children with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). [3][4][5] Faecal concentrations of calprotectin were higher in subjects with colorectal carcinoma and in those on short-term anti-inflammatory treatment than in healthy controls. 6,7 In addition, the combination of faecal calprotectin, intestinal permeability test and positive Rome I criteria reliably discriminated between patients with organic and nonorganic intestinal diseases.…”

“…После связывания с кальцием белок становится устойчивым к расщеплению под действием лейкоцитарных и микробных ферментов. Установлена высокозначимая роль КП как маркера нейтрофильного воспаления при заболеваниях желудочно-кишечного тракта и показателя интенсивности воспалительного про-цесса в кишечнике [4,5].…”

“…The greatest experience with analysis of faecal proteins is with calprotectin [44][45][46][47][48] . It accounts for up to 50% of the neutrophilic cytosolic protein while being resistant to colonic bacterial degradation.…”
