“…In the present study, the presence of cavitated carious lesions at baseline was also significant for the increased An early childhood caries study rate of progression of caries lesions at two-year follow-up compared to children with initial lesions at baseline. Similar results were found in several studies, which also showed that the presence of caries lesions at baseline increased the caries increment after the follow-up period (1,(5)(6)(7)(8)11,24).…”

“…Thus, evaluating the oral health of preschool children is important because the experience of caries in primary teeth has been considered the strongest predictor of caries in permanent teeth and this was confirmed by several longitudinal studies conducted in different countries (1,(5)(6)(7)(8).…”

“…The main risk predictors are past exposure to caries, the presence of cavitated caries lesions or recent restorations placed due to caries, as well as demographic factors relating to the patient in terms of age, level of education and disabilities that potentially expose the patient to risk habits -a teenager with uncontrolled eating habits, the elderly where oral hygiene is more difficult to maintain due to loss of motor skills, education associated with the level of care one takes of oneself and harmful lifestyles, which expose people to situations of poor hygiene and failure to seek care. [20][21][22][23][24][25][26] Figure 5 illustrates the imbalance between protective factors, pathological factors and risk predictors that exist in the case of high caries risk, a concept developed by Featherstone. [27][28][29] Indeed, the weight of the caries risk predictors is important and entails the need to counterbalance them in the implementation of measures tailored to the pathological factors present for each clinical case.…”

“…Em um estudo longitudinal, Tagliaferro et al 13 (2006) tiveram como objetivo identificar se fatores clínicos, comportamentais, demográficos e socioeconômicos podem ser considerados preditores da cárie dentária na dentição permanente de crianças com idade entre seis e oito anos de três diferentes escolas de Piracicaba SP. Dentre os fatores biológicos, o risco de cárie mostrou-se associado à experiência de cárie, além do nível educacional da mãe (componente socioeconômico).…”
