Objective. To review the literature pertaining to pharmacy preceptor training programs. Findings. Preceptor training is becoming increasingly important to maintain the quality of experiential training and professional development of pharmacy students, preregistration trainees, and residents. This review found limited documented examples of preceptor training programs and wide variation in both their design and delivery, which was attributed to the diversity of pharmacy practice workplaces and the different types of trainees. The majority of programs included a significant online component, often supported by a face-to-face orientation, with a focus on developing core competencies and with some tailoring of content to suit the specific workplace environment. Evaluations of these training programs showed high preceptor satisfaction rates, with preceptors appreciating the ease of access of online training and the benefits of interaction with other preceptors in face-to-face training. Preceptors also reported positive changes in their behavior during and attitudes toward precepting and an increased understanding of student learning. Summary. This review has highlighted that a structured and evidence-based approach to preceptor training is needed. Programs should be educationally sound, practically focused, and flexible in meeting the needs of a diverse range of preceptors and practice environments. Prospectively, programs should be evaluated not only in terms of outcomes for preceptors, but also for student, preregistration trainee, and resident engagement and attainment of educational outcomes.

Background: Preceptor development is a focus of pharmacy residency programs across the country. Graduation from residency into the role of preceptor can be a challenge, as it is one of many transitions junior practitioners make in their early careers. Literature in recent years has brought attention to the need to establish preceptor development programs that adequately allow newer preceptors to develop their skills in experiential education, for both pharmacy residents and students. Furthermore, many preceptor development programs as implemented are often didactic in nature, and include readings, webinars, and other passive learning regarding the art of precepting. Objective: Given the need to develop a preceptor development program in our service line that met the needs of preceptors-in-training and full preceptors, we offer a description of our preceptor development program in the intensive care unit. Methods: We focused on active development of preceptor skills for multiple layers of resident and student learners. In addition, this model incorporated instructing, modeling, coaching, and facilitating, as the relationship between full preceptor and preceptor-in-training evolved. It also offered the opportunity for real-time feedback and discussion on precepting performance. Conclusions: We describe our coprecepting model as an opportunity that succeeded for us in helping to transition our preceptors-in-training to full preceptors. It met the needs of our department, staff, and patients, and we believe it has the potential to be valuable as a tool extrapolated to the preceptor development programs of other institutions.

Purpose To describe the development, design, and implementation of a pilot preceptor development bootcamp and feedback related to its feasibility and impact on operational pharmacy preceptors. Summary The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center designed and implemented a pilot preceptor development bootcamp for operational staff pharmacists serving as residency preceptors for longitudinal weekend staffing experiences. A systematic, multipronged approach was taken to identify preceptor development gaps and design a full-day bootcamp curriculum. The resultant curriculum was comprised of content in major functional areas including using the 4 preceptor roles, documenting performance, giving and receiving feedback, and dealing with difficult situations or learners. The impact of the pilot preceptor development bootcamp was assessed using survey methodology and qualitative feedback from debrief discussions. Conclusion Implementation of a pilot preceptor bootcamp program addressing major areas of precepting skill was well received, resulted in positive feedback from operational pharmacy preceptors, and was feasible to implement at a large academic medical center.
