Assessment of Countermovement Jump Performance in First Position (Sauté) in Healthy Adults

Abstract: Background: Prior studies have examined muscle power via the countermovement jump (CMJ). Studies to date have examined neither the reliability nor the construct validity of the ballet first position CMJ (hips in lateral rotation, toes facing away from one another, legs straight) as a measure of power. Hypotheses: There would be (1) good interrater reliability in the visual assessment of the best-quality first position CMJ (κ ≥ 0.60), (2) good test-retest reliability in … Show more

“…Increased leg muscle strength was also obtained through variations of countermovement jump exercises. Increased ability to countermovement jump (CMJ) is one of the predictors of a person's leg muscle strength (Karim et al, 2019). Countermovement jumps (CMJs) are widely used as a form of exercise, performance monitoring, and measurement instrument, because the height of the jump measured via countermovement jump is highly correlated with leg strength and explosive power (Philpott et al, 2021).…”

“…Examining the synchronization between music and dance entails looking at the “onset or continuous action of an event at the same time as another” (Brick and Boker, 2011, p. 285). Thus, to compare the timing between music and dance, one needs to identify key elements (events) in both media.…”

“…A recent systematic review of the kinetic and kinematic parameters in ballet jumping concluded that only 4 out of 29 articles investigated male ballet dancers, identifying a gap in the literature 19 . Dance choreography routinely demands several types of jumps, including standard actions such as countermovement jumps (CMJ) or squat jumps (SJ) and ballet-specific jumps such as the sauté in first position (sauté) 20 . Sauté is one of the most common ballet jumps, which can be defined as a CMJ that is performed with an external rotation of the lower limbs and the heels together, known as turnout 21 .…”
