Avaliar se existe correlação entre maturação esquelética e maturação dentária em crianças brasileiras. Material e métodos: A amostra foi composta por 37 documentações ortodônticas de pacientes que iniciaram o tratamento ortodôntico para correção da maloclusão classe II na Universidade Positivo. Incluíram-se no estudo documentações de pacientes com idade variando de 10 a 16 anos e de ambos os sexos. Excluíram-se documentações de pacientes com alterações sistêmicas, histórico de traumatismos na região da face, fissuras labiopalatinas e agenesias dentárias. O método de avaliação da maturação mão-punho e o método de avaliação da maturação vertebral cervical serviram para análise da maturação esquelética. Os métodos de avaliação dos estágios de desenvolvimento dentário de Demirjian e Hofmann foram utilizados para avaliação da maturação dentária e o coeficiente de correlação de Pearson, para determinar a força de correlação entre as variáveis. O nível de significância usado foi de 5%. Resultados: A idade cronológica demonstrou correlação moderada com o método de avaliação da maturação esquelética de mão-punho, o método de avaliação da maturação esquelética vertebral cervical e a maturação dentária (r = 0,525, p = 0,003; r = 0,450, p = 0,014; r = 0,564, p = 0,004 e r = 0,436, p = 0,011, respectivamente). O método de avaliação da maturação mão-punho evidenciou correlação forte com o método de avaliação da maturação vertebral cervical (r = 0,864, p<0,0001) e correlação moderada com a maturação dentária de Demirjian (r = 0,551, p = 0,002). O método de Demirjian demonstrou correlação moderada com o método de Hofmann (r = 0,410, p = 0,046). Conclusão: Existe apenas uma correlação moderada entre maturação esquelética e maturação dentária.>

Radiographic Correlation of Skeletal Maturation Using the Stages of Dental Calcification in a Peruvian Population

Objective. To identify the correlation between the Baccetti method of SM (skeletal maturation) and the stages of DC (dental calcification) using the Demirjian method in the Orthodontics Service of the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia (UPCH) in Lima-Peru. Materials and Methods. The sample was obtained from panoramic and lateral radiographs of 200 subjects (116 women and 84 men) with ages between 9 and 17 years. Canine, premolar, and molar teeth calcification was evaluated using the Demirjian method while SM was evaluated by the cervical vertebrae with the Baccetti method. Spearman’s correlation coefficient was used to assess the relationship between the maturation of these cervical vertebrae and DC. Results. There is a high correlation between the Baccetti method of maturation of the cervical vertebrae and the stages of DC ranging from r = 0.635 to 0.774 for men and from r = 0.677 to 0.784 for women (p<0.001), the second lower molar being the one with the highest correlation (r = 0.774 in men) and the second lower premolar (r = 0.784 in women). Conclusions. Stages of DC could be used as a reliable indicator of SM.

Introduction. The determination of skeletal maturity stages is very important in orthodontic treatment planning, especially skeletal discrepancies in growing individuals. A hand-wrist radiograph is considered the most accurate approach for skeletal maturity detection. Dental calcification stages have been suggested as an alternative diagnostic method to decrease radiation exposure. The recent study is aimed at detecting the efficacy of dental calcification stages in assessing skeletal maturity during the prepubertal and pubertal growth periods. Methods. Patients’ records were collected from the Aleppo Orthodontic Center. Dental maturity stages were assessed from a panoramic radiograph using the Demirjian method, while skeletal maturity stages were determined using the Björk method. Four permanent left mandibular teeth were included (canine, 1st premolar, 2nd premolar, and 2nd molar) for the study. Results. From 517 records, 295 records (145 males and 150 females) were included. The Spearman rank-order correlation coefficients between skeletal maturation and dental maturation were strong and statistically significant (ranging from 0.789 to 0.835). The highest correlation was between skeletal stages and the second molar ( r = 0.829 and 0.88 in males and females, respectively). Receiver operating characteristic (ROC ) curve suggested a high validity of the sum of dental stages for the four teeth in identifying MP3= stage (sensitivity was 70%, specificity was 92.77%, and ROC area was 0.81) but not for MP3cap (sensitivity was 50.85%, specificity was 81.36%, and ROC area was 0.66). Conclusions. The correlation between the skeletal maturity stages and the dental calcification stages was high. The orthodontist can use the dental stages as a definite diagnostic tool for prepubertal growth period.
