Assessment of Cognition in Schizophrenia Using Trail Making Test: A Meta-Analysis

Abstract: ObjectiveThe present meta-analysis aimed to analyze the cognitive performance of schizophrenia patients measured by Trail Making Tests (TMT) and the contribution of socio-demographic factors to cognitive impairments. MethodsPubMed and PsycARTICLES databases were searched for the studies published between January 1985 and November 2017. Data were drawn from 19 studies encompassing 1095 patients and 324 controls. The effect size and heterogeneity were assessed with Comprehensive Meta-Analysis version 2 using ran… Show more

“…In the cognitive tests, the smaller reproduction scores of ROCFT after 3-min and 30-min (meta-analysis [23]) and smaller TMT scores in patients with schizophrenia (meta-analysis [24]) agreed with the results of the previous studies. In addition, these cognitive functions may not be improved by football habits.…”

“…From the viewpoint of psychiatry, generally in patients with schizophrenia, visual cognitive and executive functioning were impaired (e.g., [23][24][25]), which may be critical in the 3-vs-1 task. However, it remains unknown what cognitive characteristics in patients with schizophrenia who have team sports habits are similar to or worse than those in a control group.…”

“…Recent reviews suggested a deficiency in cognitive flexibility across diagnostic categories ( 22 24 ), including schizophrenia ( 25 , 26 ), major depressive disorder ( 14 ), autistic spectrum disorders ( 27 , 28 ), and obsessive-compulsive disorder ( 29 ). Studies that examined cognitive flexibility between diagnostic groups had yielded mixed results.…”

“…Even though their scores are comparable in most tested populations, CTT's lack of numbers and letters and use of colors for responses seems to place people from cultures which don't use the Latin alphabet, illiterate persons, or those experiencing language difficulties at an advantage (6). Initially, performance times in both parts of these tests were interpreted separately, with CTT 1 and TMT A considered to measure processing speed, while CTT 2 and TMT B to assess cognitive flexibility (8)(9)(10).…”
