The solar light response and photoelectrons produced by widespread semiconducting mineral play important roles in biogeochemical cycles on Earth’s surface. To explore the potential influence of photoelectrons generated by semiconducting mineral particles on nitrate-reducing microorganisms in the photic zone, a marine heterotrophic denitrifier Halomonas sp. strain 3727 was isolated from seawater in the photic zone of the Yellow Sea, China. This strain was classified as a Halomonadaceae. Whole-genome analysis indicated that this strain possessed genes encoding the nitrogen metabolism, i.e., narG, nasA, nirBD, norZ, nosB, and nxr, which sustained dissimilatory nitrate reduction, assimilatory nitrate reduction, and nitrite oxidation. This strain also possessed genes related to carbon, sulfur, and other metabolisms, hinting at its substantial metabolic flexibility. A series of microcosm experiments in a simulative photoelectron system was conducted, and the results suggested that this bacterial strain could use simulated photoelectrons with different energy for nitrate reduction. Nitrite, as an intermediate product, was accumulated during the nitrate reduction with limited ammonia residue. The nitrite and ammonia productions differed with or without different energy electron supplies. Nitrite was the main product accounting for 30.03% to 68.40% of the total nitrogen in photoelectron supplement systems, and ammonia accounted for 3.77% to 8.52%. However, in open-circuit systems, nitrite and ammonia proportions were 26.77% and 11.17%, respectively, and nitrogen loss in the liquid was not observed. This study reveals that photoelectrons can serve as electron donors for nitrogen transformation mediated by Halomonas sp. strain 3727, which reveals an underlying impact on the nitrogen biogeochemical cycle in the marine photic zone.

A multidisciplinary study based on several digital (geology, lithology, shoreline evolution, photo-interpretation of aerial and ortho-photographs) and field (topographic and vegetational surveys, grain-size analysis) datasets prompted new insights to a better definition of the processes in action at the Grande beach at São Francisco do Sul Island (Santa Catarina, Brazil). The resulting data enabled us to produce a multi-thematic map at 1:50,000 scale that might be useful in assisting decision-makers to manage the coastal system, taking into account involved factors at once and not separately. In addition, the map may be implemented and integrated with new information, since the database is provided in geographical information system. The results confirmed the importance of addressing coastal systems with a multi-faceted approach that can be applied everywhere, not only in settings similar to São Francisco do Sul Island.

Wide sea beaches, beach ridges, barrier sand spits, sand dunes, and climate-sensitive tidal flats with mangrove forests on the coast of Odisha and West Bengal are the products of coastal process dynamics during the middle to late Holocene epoch under a stable sea level stage. These features are resilient to the global climate change phenomenon under natural conditions with the continuous supply of sediments and the spread of habitats that protect the coastal lowlands behind them against storms and inundations. Both the geomorphological and ecological systems of the depositional features were developed and optimized into matured stages before human intervention into the coastal system. These features were well developed along the storm-affected shoreline of the eastern coast of India with the supply of sediments into the coastal zones by river inputs, longshore current transport, cross-shore transport through storms, transgressive seas during the Holocene epoch, seasonal wind waves, and aeolian deposits. After assessing the climatic sensitivity stress, exposure index, adaptive capacities, and coastal vulnerabilities of the study area, the final result shows high susceptivity scores for the landforms that represent low resilient capacity; whereas, the coastal tracts of Purba Medinipur, and Sundarban represent low resilient capacity; and the coastal tract of Odisha reflects high to moderate resilient capacity. In the perspective of the global climate change phenomenon and human intervention into the coastal systems, the present study was conducted to find out the temporal changes of the coastal depositional features, to estimate the sensitivity of the features, and finally, to enquire about their susceptibility to the impact of cyclonic storms and the rapid rate of sea-level rise process currently occurring in the region of the tropical coast.
