Salix myrtilloides L. (swamp willow) is the most endangered species among the boreal Salix species in Poland. The number and size of its population have been decreasing constantly since the 1990s. The main aim of the study was to determine the viability of collected S. myrtilloides pollen and optimal conditions for its in vitro germination. The pollen of S. myrtilloides was collected from 25 male individuals from a population growing in the mid-forest peat bog Dekowina (Sobibór Landscape Park) in May 2014. Two methods were applied to estimate the viability of fresh and stored pollen: staining pollen with 2% acetocarmine solution and in vitro germinability. Various temperature (11°C, 23°C) and light conditions as well as different concentrations of glucose (1%, 2.5%, 5%, or 7.5%) were tested for the optimization of in vitro germination. We documented relatively high S. myrtilloides pollen viability. Pollen tube growth was found to be largely affected by both glucose content in the medium and thermal conditions during germination. Fresh pollen germinated most effectively on the medium with 2.5% glucose (stored pollen -in 5% glucose), at 23°C and in the presence of light. We conclude that pollen viability of S. myrtilloides does not seem to be a limiting factor for reproductive success. Moreover, the pollen is not sterile even after storage for 12 months. The S. myrtilloides individuals from the Dekowina peat bog produce viable pollen grains that are able to germinate and therefore it can be used to pollinate other populations present in the Polesie Lubelskie region for gene pool enrichment.

Indian willow (Salix tetrasperma) is an agriculturally useful tree which occurs over a wide geographic area across South Asia and bears importance. So far, this species has never been studied for molecular genetic diversity. The present study was, therefore, carried out to assess the genetic diversity and population structure analysis using RAPD and ISSR molecular markers in diverse genotypes from five populations covering North India. The mean number of effective alleles, Shannon information index and gene diversity i.e., 1.38 ± 0.013, 0.35 ± 0.010 and 0.23 ± 0.007, respectively were obtained with RAPD + ISSR markers. The analysis of molecular variance generated by RAPD + ISSR revealed a higher genetic variation (87%) within population as compared to that of among population (13%). Nei genetic distance was maximum (0.185) between Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab populations. Significant Mantel correlation (r=0.551,) was obtained between RAPD and ISSR markers. Bayesian clustering pattern obtained through STRUCTURE software showed four gene pools. Based on the genetic information obtained with regards to Indian willow by combining the RAPD and ISSR marker systems, it is proposed that an individual tree be selected within populations rather than among populations for the improvement of economic traits of Indian willow alongwith conservation of entire ecological populations.

The aim of the study was to compare the physical-chemical quality parameters of shallow groundwater quality in peat bogs of the Łęczna-Włodawa Lake District in the context of the occurrence of selected boreal species of plant relics: dwarf birch (Betula humilis Schrank), downy willow (Salix lapponum L.) and swamp willow (Salix myrtylloides L.). Analyzes of shallow groundwater quality parameters included physical-chemical parameters: reaction (pH), electrolytic conductivity (EC), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), total nitrogen (TN), ammonium nitrogen (NH 4 ), nitrite nitrogen (NO 2 ), nitrate nitrogen (NO 3 ), total phosphorus (TP), phosphate (PO 4 ), sulfate (SO 2 ), sodium (Na), potassium (K), calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg) by certified laboratory tests.It was found that the natural hydrochemical specification of peat bogs is characterized by fluctuations associated with the dynamics of internal metabolism of peat ecosystems without the visible impact of anthropopressure. This is confirmed by the concentration of nutrients: TN at the study sites were within a broad range of mean values: 16.92-45.31 mg•dm -3 ; NH 4 (0.55-0.76 mg•dm -3 ); NO 2 (0.06-4.33 mg•dm -3 ); and NO 3 did not exceed 0.2 mg•dm -3 , and concentration of TP adopted mean values in a range of 0.22-0.42 mg•dm -3 .The studied physical-chemical factors of shallow groundwater were within the habitat preferences of the studied species, but in differentiated qualitative and quantitative ways determined optimal conditions for building the population of the studied species. Particularly values of TP lower than other obtained values in a range of: 0.08-0.32 mg•dm -3 ; PO 4 = 0.1 mg•dm -3 ; TN = 2.2-21.2 mg•dm -3 ; NH 4 = 0.1-0.46 mg•dm -3 ; DOC = 24.6-55.9 mg•dm -3 , as well as higher than average pH values in a range of: 5.34-5.95 and concentration of Ca = 5.67-28.1 mg•dm -3 and Mg = 0.56-2.41 mg•dm -3 , as well as EC = 72.1-142.3 µS•cm -1 can be treated as a condition favouring proper development of the population of dwarf birch. For Salix lapponum: a reduced level of values of nitrogen fractions (TN = 3.01-18.84 mg•dm -3 ; NH 4 = 0.1-0.41 mg•dm -3 ), a reduced level of values of phosphorus fractions (TP = 0.09-0.44 mg•dm -3 ; PO 4 = 0.1-0.44 mg•dm -3 ), part of ions (Ca = 4.39-19.63 mg•dm -3 ; Mg = 0.77-3.37 mg•dm -3 ), pH = 5.9-6.4, EC = 124-266 µS•cm -1 and DOC = 24.1-57.5 mg•dm -3 . For the equally studied Salix myrtylloides, such conditions were met by: TP = 0.1-0.41 mg•dm -3 ; PO 4 = 0.1-0.18 mg•dm -3 , DOC = 27.5-50.9 mg•dm -3 , pH = 5.3-5.94 and EC = 62.2-139.3 µS•cm -1 .
