Assessment of Bony Nasolacrimal Parameters Among Asians

Abstract: There is no significant difference in nasolacrimal duct diameter among ethnic groups, which may predispose one to nasolacrimal duct obstruction. But, this is significantly associated with inter-frontozygomatic suture distance, suggesting that a wider face is associated with wider nasolacrimal duct diameter. An acute frontonasal angle predicts a thicker anterior lacrimal crest for surgical preparation during dacryocystorhinostomy.

“…2,4,11 This is thought to be due to the fact that the dense fibrous tissue pulls the anterior lamella of the eyelids medially and superiorly in the lower eyelid and medially and inferiorly in the upper eyelid, thus making a vector of the cilia to fall dorsally. 12,13,14 In addition, the medial portion of the tarsus approach to the MCT, where is not enough base for anchoring the rotational suture, which may result in the under-correction of the epiblepharon. Thus, epicanthoplasty is not always but considered essential for successful epiblepharon surgery, which can be vital for visual development, especially in younger children.…”

“…To reduce the traction of the epicanthal fold on the eyelids, disconnecting the dense fibrous tissue from the anterior lamella of the eyelids is essential. 12,13,14 After this dissociation, a common problem that arises is the amount of the skin on the epicanthal fold varies depending on its width and length. This often leads to epicanthoplasty failure.…”
