Assessment of biophysical properties of Royal Belum tropical forest, Malaysia

Abstract: The Royal Belum forest reserve is one of the oldest tropical rainforests in the world and it is one of the largest virgin forest reserves in Malaysia. However, not many studies have been conducted to understand the ecology of this forest. In this study we estimated the aboveground biomass (AGB) of the forest using diameter at breast height (DBH) and height of trees (h), tree species and hemispherical photographs of tree canopy. We estimated AGB using five allometric equations. Our results demonstrated that the… Show more

“…1). The RBTRC comprises several forest reserves, including the Royal Belum State Park, Banding Forest Reserve, Gerik Forest Reserve, and Temenggor Forest Reserve, with only the Royal Belum State Park being fully protected since 2007 [13]. Connecting these forest reserves is the Temenggor Lake, a man-made lake spanning 15,200 hectares and a depth of up to 60.96 metres, utilised for hydroelectricity generation.…”

“…The park's 117,500 hectares form the second largest terrestrial protected area in Peninsular Malaysia. Apart from ecotourism, commercial activities, such as logging, that could impact the virgin forest are not permitted within RBSP (Kanniah et al 2018).…”
