Assessment of biological effectiveness of boron neutron capture therapy in primary and metastatic melanoma cell lines

Abstract: These obtained in vitro results are the first effectiveness factors determined for human melanoma at the RA-3 nuclear reactor and show that BNCT dosimetry planning for patients could be successfully performed using these new factors.

“…BPA and BSH (Katchem, Prague, Czech Republic), as well as the PEGylated liposomal form of BSH, were used as boron compounds. To prepare the BPA solution, fructose was used in molar excess according to the protocol by Rossini et al (2015). Liposomes were obtained by phase inversion followed by extrusion with the lipid phase of DSPC, DSPE-PEG, and CH used in a 2:1:0.11 molar ratio (Maruyama et al 2004).…”

“…A concentration of 10 µ g g −1 of boron in the cell culture medium adopted in our study represents a value close to those determined in blood samples during clinical treatment (Fukuda et al, 1994). Furthermore, the 10 µ g g −1 value has been tested in previous studies of effectiveness of BNCT in vitro (Rossini et al, 2015).…”
