This study compared the micromorphological and agrochemical metrics in soils from the quarry dumps and zonal soils, the Central Caucasus. Soil micromorphological investigations are important tool for evaluation of soil dynamics after anthropogenic impacts on terrestrial ecosystems. The results showed that the carbon content in the primary soil of the sand and gravel quarries was lower than that in the reference soil. The differences detected were statistically significant for both the Urvan plot soils (t = 11.95; p = 0.000) and the Progress plot soils (t = 18.73; p = 0.000). In contrast, in the quarry with clay bottom substrate (Gerpegezh), no significant difference was found between the reference and postmine soils. The reference soil around the sand and gravel quarries was slightly more acidic than the primary soil. In the clay quarry, the primary soil was more acidic with a strong acidic value, while the reference soil was neutral. The difference of nutrients (P, K, NH4+, NO3-) between the primary and reference soils were negligible. The only exception was the NO3- content in the reference soil of Progress settlement, where it was significantly higher (t = 4.19; p = 0.002) than in the original soil of the site. No difference was observed for the mineral component of the primary soil. Investigation of key zonal soils of the region. Zonal Caucasus soils: Phaeozem Gleiyc, Phaeozem and Umbric Retisol are different in terms of micro texture. Thus, Phaeozem Gleiyc characterizes by microstructure composed by primary angular mineral forms. Phaeozem and Retisol demonstrated formation of biogenic structure with alteration of mineral particles. Data obtained show that rapid self revegetation of the quarries results in initialization of primary soil formation and transformation of the soil microstructure and organization on the micro level.

Comprehensive studies of the biological status of ordinary chernozem (Haplic Chernozem (Loamic)) were carried out in the early years of the fallow regime in comparison with its arable analogue, old fallow, and the reference virgin steppe soils. They included a field experiment on the conversion of an oldarable plot with the ordinary chernozem in Botanical Garden of the Southern Federal University to a fallow. In this experiment, organic carbon and the activity of two classes of enzymes, oxidoreductases (catalases and dehydrogenases) and hydrolases (β-fructofuranosidase) were compared for soils under land-use variants. The organic carbon content in the soil of the young fallow increased already in the first year; it did not change significantly in subsequent years of plant cover restoration, and varied depending on the observation period during the growing season. The activity of the enzymes also increased in the first year of the fallow regime and continued to restore throughout the time after the cessation of agricultural use. The catalase activity in the young fallow soil was 9% higher (p < 0.05) than in the first year of research, the activity of dehydrogenases increased by 20% (p < 0.05), and β-fructofuranosidase by 10% (p < 0.05). However, the enzymatic activity was significantly lower than in the case of old fallow and, especially, of the reference soil in the virgin steppe.

Microbial communities in soils are generally considered to be limited by carbon (C), which could be a crucial control for basic soil functions and responses of microbial heterotrophic metabolism to climate change. However, global soil microbial C limitation (MCL) has rarely been estimated and is poorly understood. Here, we predicted MCL, defined as limited availability of substrate C relative to nitrogen and/or phosphorus to meet microbial metabolic requirements, based on the thresholds of extracellular enzyme activity across 847 sites (2476 observations) representing global natural ecosystems. Results showed that only about 22% of global sites in terrestrial surface soils show relative C limitation in microbial community. This finding challenges the conventional hypothesis of ubiquitous C limitation for soil microbial metabolism. The limited geographic extent of C limitation in our study was mainly attributed to plant litter, rather than soil organic matter that has been processed by microbes, serving as the dominant C source for microbial acquisition. We also identified a significant latitudinal pattern of predicted MCL with larger C limitation at mid‐ to high latitudes, whereas this limitation was generally absent in the tropics. Moreover, MCL significantly constrained the rates of soil heterotrophic respiration, suggesting a potentially larger relative increase in respiration at mid‐ to high latitudes than low latitudes, if climate change increases primary productivity that alleviates MCL at higher latitudes. Our study provides the first global estimates of MCL, advancing our understanding of terrestrial C cycling and microbial metabolic feedback under global climate change.
