Assessment of atrial septal defect size and residual rim using real-time 3D transesophageal echocardiography

Abstract: Real-time 3DTEE allows measurements of the temporal and spatial changes of ASD size and shape. This methodology provides detailed information on defect dynamics.

“…In addition, we studied the relationship between 2D and 3D TEE measurements of the ASD residual rim, especially in complex ASDs. A good linear relationship was also found between these two modalities in measurement of residual rims, which is consistent with previous studies (10). Moreover, we found the limits of IVC rim agreement between 2D and 3D TEE measurements were broader than those of both the aortic and SVC rim groups.…”

“…The IAS is also extremely thin, making it more difficult to evaluate the defect. Real-time 3D TEE technology provides vivid imaging that can dynamically display the temporal and spatial changes in defect shape, size, and of surrounding tissue, and clarify the residual rim (10,16). Commercially available quantitative software is available for measurements of defect diameters and area in 2D imaging extracted from 3D TEE data sets.…”
