Assessment of Anterior Segment Changes in Pseudophakic Eyes, Using Ultrasonic Biomicroscopic Imaging, after Pars Plana Vitrectomy with Silicone Oil or Gas Tamponade

Abstract: Objective. To evaluate the morphological changes of the anterior segment using ultrasonic biomicroscopy (UBM) imaging in pseudophakic patients who underwent pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) with silicone oil or gas (C3F8) internal tamponade agent injection. Method. This prospective study included pseudophakic patients with planned PPV, divided into two groups according to internal tamponade agent: those in which silicone oil was used (n = 27, Group 1) and those in which gas (C3F8) was used (n = 24, Group 2). UBM me… Show more

“… 4 There is conflicting evidence as to the change in ACD in pseudophakic eyes following vitrectomy with the use of gas. One study has shown that in patients in which gas tamponade was used, the ACD was statistically significantly reduced, 9 while others have found no change in ACD when vitrectomy is performed regardless of the use of gas. 1 , 2 …”

“…Studies that have explored this issue commonly use ultrasound biomicroscopy. The possible changes in the anterior segment are put in context with gas tamponade 26 . It is also clear that impacts on the anterior segment are higher in combined surgery 27 .…”

“…Pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) is considered a standard surgical approach in many vitreoretinal diseases. However, PPV can lead complications, some of which arise from the changes in anterior segment morphology [4]- [11].…”
