Assessment of Anger Arousal

Abstract: Reasons for the paucity of research on anger are discussed and four measures of anger arousal are reviewed: Buss Durkee Hostility Inventory, Reaction Inventory, Anger Self-report, and Anger Inventory. Normative data are reported for 150 subjects and sex differences are assessed. A correlation matrix presents intercorrelations for all anger scales and also correlations between the scales and social desirability. Factor analysis revealed five separate factors which accounted for the total variance. The research … Show more

“…Women also tend to smile more, but results from a meta-analysis suggest that they do so especially in situations where they are expected to smile more (LaFrance, Hecht, & Paluck, 2003). In sharp contrast, men feel anger more frequently and tend to be more aggressive than women (Biaggio, 1980(Biaggio, , 1989Doyle & Biaggio, 1981). This provides evidence against the idea that women are generally more emotional than men and instead, it depends on the type of emotion and on the situation.…”

“…Research in this area is increasingly theory driven. As a result, progress is being made in efforts to specify or distinguish the extent to which intensity of angry feelings as a state or trait, hostile beliefs, or the style of expressing anger contribute to the pathogenesis of physical illness (e.g., Biaggio, 1980;Musante et al, 1989;Spielberger et al, 1983Spielberger et al, , 1988 and the mechanisms by which these variables exert their effects (Leiker and Hailey, 1988;Williams et al, 1985).…”

“…For example, the Framingham Heart Study found that middle-aged women were more likely to inhibit anger expression as compared to middie-aged men ( Hayaes & Feinleib, 1980). In addition, a study by Biaggio (1980) found that males tended to score higher on subscales of the BussDurkee Hostility hventory (BDHI; Buss & Durkee. L957) that measured a tendency to show aggressive expression of anger, whereas fernales tended to score higher on subscales that measured a tendency to inhibit anger expression.…”
