Assessment of a low-intensity cardiac rehabilitation programme using the six-minute walk test

Abstract: The 6'WT proved to be a simple and effective measurement of functional capacity in patients performing cardiac rehabilitation. The clinical programme investigated successfully increased patients' functional capacity as assessed by the 6'WT. Significant improvement in PEFR and grip strength was also demonstrated, compared with a control population.

“…These data are of particular relevance since the evaluation of patient functional capacity may provide important information to assess a prognosis and response to therapy, as well as to guide exercise training prescription. [18][19][20][21] The 6 MWT is a field exercise test which has gained popularity in the past 2 decades. Its metabolic, ventilatory, and cardiovascular demands are consistent with a submaximal test, at least in patients with COPD and CHF.…”

“…4) In CHF, such tests have been widely applied to assess the responses to pharmacological interventions and as a useful prognostic indicator. [18][19][20][21] These tests possess a number of advantages such as their simplicity, safety, and negligible cost. Although the 6 MWT correlated moderately well with peak VO 2 , it seems to be more adequate at providing an index of the ability of a patient to carry on their daily life activities.…”

“…The dietician also teaches the family members about the importance of appropriate diet in successful rehabilitation. The physical therapist evaluates the patient's muscle strength, mobility, and joint range of motion, performs the 6-min walk test, gait speed test, timed two times sit to stand, Berg balance test and if warranted performs assessment of arm girth and assessment of the scar [16]. The treatment interventions provided include therapeutic exercises to maintain or increase range of motion, endurance, and mobility training (for example, transfers, gait, stair climbing).…”

“…The patients performed a 10-meter shuttle walking for 6 min in the pool with water height up to the hip line. The target of this test was to walk the longest possible distance in the water within 6 min [14]. Heart rate was recorded throughout the test using a heart rate monitor (Polar Electro).…”
