The project or dissertation is the most significant element in a master's program. In the UK, this assessment is worth a third or more credits out of 180 and contributes to student degrees, which is seen as a benchmark for employability. Despite the increased regulation and accountability regarding academic standards, there is very little debate on grading practices, particularly dissertation marking. The limited research on the assessment of master's dissertations indicates the need for more research in that area. This paper presents a study that investigated markers' (n=31) master's project dissertations marking practices in Computing Science at a university. Kruskal-Wallis tests revealed that participants' marking practices were not statistically different despite having different marking loads and master's dissertation marking experiences. Findings also show that many assessors do not typically use marking schemes; the marking load negatively affects their marking. Most would prefer complete anonymity of marking, including blind negotiation. A third of assessors have had issues marking dissertations outside their area of expertise. Thematic analysis of the qualitative data corroborated those findings and revealed three overarching themes: 1) I felt that I betrayed my ethical principles, 2) I tried to acknowledge my bias/familiarity with the topic, and 3) Improving the marking experience, second marking and reconciliation process. The paper highlights four key points to consider to improve the master's dissertation marking process.

Graduate education is the main way to train high-level innovative talents, the basic layout to cope with the global talent competition, and the important cornerstone for implementing the innovation-driven development strategy and building an innovation-driven country. Therefore, graduate education is of great remarkably to the development of national education. As an important manifestation of graduate education, the quality of a graduate thesis should receive more attention. It is conducive to promoting the quality of graduates by supervising and examining the quality of the graduate thesis. For this purpose, this work is based on text mining, expert interviews, and questionnaire surveys to obtain the factors influencing the quality of a graduate thesis first. Then, through three rounds of expert consultation, a multidimensional evaluation indicator system for the graduate thesis quality is built. Furthermore, probabilistic linguistic term sets (PLTSs) are utilized to obtain the initial evaluation information and apply the stepwise weight assessment ratio analysis method to determine the weights of attributes. In the ensuing step, the novel multi-attribute border approximation area comparison based on the PLTS method is established. Finally, the proposed method is employed in a case study concerning the quality evaluation of a graduate thesis and the effectiveness of this approach is further illustrated.

Translating an L1 (source text) into a target language would be a daunting task and time-consuming work for students who are non-native speakers. It might be more challenging when the L1 text is a discipline specific text. Many words and specific terms are difficult to translate, and often unintended meanings emerge during this translation process. Although there has been considerable research on the translation studies, there has been still little study on how translators cope with the challenges. To fill this void, this case study is aimed to describe techniques employed by students majoring pharmacy in translating direction for use texts from English into Bahasa Indonesia. Adopting Vinay’s and Darbelnet’s (1996) translation methodology, this research is aimed to describe the translation process that students already undertook in order to produce texts that appropriately work in a particular social context. There are four drug brochures taken as samples of analysis. These texts are students’ assignment for the topic of translation. This is a group work and part of the whole assessment. The study provides detailed and specific examples of how students tackle the challenges of translating discipline specific texts into equivalent languages that are socio-culturally and linguistically acceptable. HIGHLIGHTS: Translating a text is not simply to transfer the meaning of source text into the target text, but it requires the translator to have sufficient discipline specific knowledge. The challenges and problems faced by translators would be different from one another since each discipline specific text requires different strategies.
