The main intent of the study is to investigate the conceptual framework of sustainability associated with the social, economic, and environmental context of the city of Ternopil, Ukraine. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and MetaAnalyses have been used to better understand the conceptual threshold area of sustainability. Geospatial approaches are used to measure the city’s sustainability. The results indicate that Ternopil city’s socio-economic context moderately supports sustainability, while the environmental context is less supportive. The study found that the city’s economic growth and development have caused environmental degradation, leading to the loss of biodiversity and natural resources. However, the study revealed that the city is adopting sustainable practices. The city’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) have been analysed in light of sustainability. The study recommends that policymakers and stakeholders in Ternopil City should prioritise sustainable development practices, such as implementing public transport and promoting sustainable urban planning. Overall, the study provides insights into the relationship between socioeconomic and environmental factors and sustainability in Ternopil City and highlights the need for sustainable development practices to ensure a sustainable future for the city.

The role of transport infrastructure, especially railways, in shaping a nation's socio-economic and cultural dynamics is of paramount importance. The present research delves into the profound influence of the railway network on Iran's regional transformation, from its inception to present times. An in-depth historical evaluation uncovers the genesis and expansion of the Iranian railway system, linking it intricately with pivotal junctures in the nation's trajectory. Emphasis is placed on regions undergoing substantial developmental shifts, attributable to enhanced rail connectivity, offering distinct examples of varied growth paradigms. Economic repercussions manifest as interregional trade augmentation, resurgence of industries, and alterations in employment landscapes, thereby positing railways as an integral component of Iran's economic blueprint. Concurrently, an exhaustive scrutiny of socio-cultural realms underscores railways' pivotal role in fostering intercultural exchanges and expediting urbanisation trends. From an environmental perspective, the sustainability merits of rail transport are illuminated, accentuating the increasing pertinence of ecological considerations in railway's prospective expansion. Through meticulous case studies, a comparative narrative emerges between areas endowed with rail connectivity and those situated in relative isolation. The objective is to elucidate railways as instigators of transformative shifts. This study culminates with projections grounded in potential technological advancements poised to reshape Iran's railway infrastructure and the ensuing regional implications. Increasing heatwaves are making cities and their populations more vulnerable, parallel to urban sprawl and the aging population in Hungary. The increasing number of hot days is predicted to worsen urban climate anomalies at the local scale, which, in parallel with changing land use patterns, may contribute to a significant increase in vulnerability to heatwaves. Local stakeholders and decision-makers need to understand the critical role of spatiotemporal land use – land cover (LULC) patterns and urban climate aspects to address relevant challenges for urban development. The current literature does not contain a synthesis analysis of major Hungarian cities that includes urban climate and sustainability findings hand by hand; therefore, this study aims to analyze LULC patterns, urban hotspots and surface urban heat island effects. In addition, the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) was determined as an important indicator for assessing the health and density of green spaces in major Hungarian cities from 2006 to 2018 using remote sensing data. Our results show that each city experienced significant urban sprawl, while above-average NDVI areas decreased over time. The average increase in the share of built-up areas was 1.3% from 2006 to 2018, while the calculated average decline in agricultural areas was 2%, so the expansion of residential areas and artificial areas is not the only driving force of this shrinking trend in agricultural areas. Furthermore, we found that urban hotspots are generally concentrated in industrial areas and represent new spaces of heat islands on the outskirts of cities. Székesfehérvár has the most intense industrial heat islands, with the largest proportion of urban hotspots (approximately 3.5% of the total area) concentrated in industrial zones. Our study contributes to uncovering inter-urban processes of land use patterns and urban climate issues in major Hungarian cities, moreover revealing sustainability-related issues from a lock-in perspective.
