Assessment and design of the flood protection measures in the district of Levice (Slovakia)

Abstract: The Slovak lowlands have been threatened by floods recently. The Levice district is one of the regions endangered by floods from extreme hydrological situations. The investigated river, which passes through this district is the River Podluzianka with the Cajkovsky brook and the Rybnicky brook as right-bank tributaries. The present conditions of the flood protection in the Levice district area are not sufficient. For this reason, it was necessary to analyze the river flow regime and propose appropriate flood pr… Show more

“…The user can choose to create storage areas connected to weirs or (as in this case) culverts or weirs (Fig. 6), with many cross-section profiles upstream from the construction, to ensure detailed and correct calculations of the water levels behind the structure [22]. These proposals are the result of many attempts and errors (the trial -error method), because it was determined that while the flood waves were passing the detention reservoirs, they would be over-spilled [23].…”

“…Due to the substantial economic and environmental impacts of recent floods, flood frequency analyses and estimations of design discharges continue to attract a great deal of interest in contemporary engineering hydrology. The recent extreme floods in Slovakia and Central Europe have raised concerns about the reliability of flood frequency estimates, especially in ungauged basins, and also increased interest in regional flood frequency analysis [1].…”

“…Natural hazard represented by floods events are revealing significant threat for inhabitants, while global damages due to climate change and floods have increased [5]- [8]. Therefore, even in the most complicated situation that could occur during the flood peak, the level of the hazard may be reduced with better management of the river basin.…”
