Assessment and clinicopathological correlation of p16 expression in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma

Abstract: As HPV integration with transcription of viral oncoprotein induces overexpression of p16, immunohistochemical expression of p16 can be used as a surrogate marker of HPV. This approach can be implemented in diagnostic laboratories and can provide support for vaccination program in high risk group.

“…The carcinogenesis caused by tobacco and alcohol abuse and HPV infection is known to be synergistic to development of HNSCCs [34][35][36]. Our study could not find a statistical correlation between smoking tobacco and p16 status similar to findings by Lazarus et al [37] , and Ralli et al [27], but in contrast, Smith et al [32] showed significant association between alcohol and tobacco use (P < 0.05).
