Assessing the worldwide developments of national spatial data clearinghouses

Abstract: Abstract. Many countries throughout the world have spent considerable resources over the past few years debating optimal national spatial data infrastructures. One of the main elements of these infrastructures is the national spatial data clearinghouse, which facilitates access to required spatial data and provide complementary services. With this in mind, in April 2000 and December 2000, 2002 a web survey was carried out to assess systematically the developments of these national clearinghouses worldwide. Reg… Show more

“…The second generation of SDI development characteristically falls into two groups: firstly those countries who started to develop an SDI initiative during the period of the first generation and are gradually modifying and upgrading the initiative, and secondly, those countries who have recently decided to design and develop an SDI for their respective countries and/or have just commenced doing so (Crompvoets et al 2004).…”

“…However the data will only be useful if it is compatible with the potential users system. Therefore the clearinghouse or access network needs to be linked with the other SDI components (people, data, standards and policy) so that data is accessible and also usable [36]. Some portals have recognised this, for example the Australian Oceans Portal suggests using Open GIS Consortium (OGC) standards and technology to comply with international and national standards as recommended by ANZLIC for the ASDI [37].…”
