“…However, it is important to recognize that not all elements of the CAP must align with the global SDGs, because the CAP has additional important EU priorities beyond the SDGs (e.g., maintenance of grassland, young farmers and small farms), which should not be disregarded as existing policies are increasingly directed towards achieving the SDGs. There is also a need for more indicators to assess responsible consumption and production (SDG 12) throughout the broader food system, including for food waste (Pe'er et al, 2017) and for how well the food production incentivized under the CAP aligns with healthy diets that lower nutrition-related diseases (Recanati et al, 2019) and supports both health and environmental goals (Willett et al, 2019). In order to support achieving the SDGs, these indicators may need to be explicitly assessed as impacts of European agriculture and agricultural policy, or else be considered specifically in other sectorsthe Farm to Fork Strategy (EC, n.d.b) needs to play a role here in coordinating across sectors in the food system.…”

“…As part of achieving this goal, EU member states are encouraged to turn environmental challenges into growth opportunities and make efficient use of their natural resources (Balkyte and Tvaronaviciene, 2010). Furthermore, in line with the principle of sustainable development launched by the Rio Earth Summit, reforms in the EU's Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) objectives to support rural development support the idea of incentivising environmentally compatible farming practices through direct payments (Recanati et al, 2019). These institutional policies have obvious implications for enterprises, motivating them to protect the environment while at the same time stimulating them to extract value by exploring environmental credence for differentiation on the market.…”

“…China's top-down management system makes it much easier to implement large-scale developing projects or agricultural structural adjustments. Finally, food production is being further incorporated into landscape service and biodiversity management along with the reform of the CAP policy and the establishment of Agri-Urban Programs in the Greater Paris Region [4,6,78,79]. Beijing's top-down afforestation program on farmlands in the plain [45] implies that China's metropolitan areas still consider agriculture in a contradictive position with environmental concern.…”
