Assessing the Risk and Needs of Supervised Sexual Offenders

Abstract: Effective intervention with offenders requires accurate identification of their risk-relevant propensities. In this prospective study, 139 Canadian community supervision officers were trained to assess the risk factors and criminogenic needs of adult male sexual offenders using structured risk tools. Recidivism outcomes were recorded for 768 offenders (average age of 41 years, approximately half had child victims, 14% Aboriginal) during an average 7-year follow-up period. All forms of recidivism (sexual, viole… Show more

“…The Stable-2007 coding manual consists of decision rules used to combine the Static-99R and Stable-2007. The reported AUCs for sexual recidivism in the original study (The Dynamic Supervision Project) of Static-99 was .74, Stable-2007 was .67, and the combination of Static-99 and Stable-2007 produced an overall increase in predictive validity which was found to be .76 (Hanson, Helmus, & Harris, 2015). The ICC of Stable-2007 is .79 on the total score (Fernandez et al, 2014).…”

“…Static-99R and Static-2002R were developed on, and primarily intended for, individuals who are currently (or recently) serving a sentence for a sex offense. Two of the samples had not previously been used for STATIC norms (Hanson, Lunetta, Phenix, Neeley, & Epperson, 2014;Lehmann, Hanson, et al, 2013) and one was substantially updated (Hanson, Helmus, & Harris, 2015). For additional information, refer to Helmus (2009) and the original studies.…”

“…Etiological theories of risk for sexual offending also distinguish between more enduring psychological vulnerabilities, and risk states in which those vulnerabilities may have been RISK-RELATED CHANGE ON PAROLE triggered by contextual factors (Beech & Ward, 2004) This acute-stable distinction is reflected in some newer assessment tools (e.g., Stable-2007 andAcute-2007;Hanson, Harris, Scott, & Helmus, 2007;Hanson, Helmus, & Harris, (2015).…”
