Assessing the optimum combustion under constrained conditions

Abstract: This work studies the optimum heat release law of a direct injection diesel engine under constrained conditions. For this purpose, a zero-dimensional predictive model of a diesel engine is coupled to an optimization tool used to shape the heat release law in order to optimize some outputs (maximize gross indicated efficiency and minimize NO x emissions) while keeping several restrictions (mechanical limits such as maximum peak pressure and maximum pressure rise rate). In a first step, this methodology is appli… Show more

“…911 They are performed to assess the effect of fuel blends 12 and alternative fuels 10 or the heat transfer variation by insulating the combustion chamber walls 13 or to analyze the engine operating conditions in the energy repartition. 14,15 Generally, the energy balance is carried out by considering the brake power, mechanical losses and the exhaust gas energy. It can be performed in a more detail way by considering the heat transfers in the coolant and oil.…”

“…For doing a more exhaustive analysis, it was necessary to obtain some results from thermodynamic diagnosis by means of a zero dimensional model. 22,23 This tool, very used in a wide type of works related to the optimization of the combustion process 29 or for studying constructive parameters of the engine, such as the in-cylinder swirl air movement, on the engine efficiency 30 or on both the engine heat rejection and efficiency, 31 it has been used for determining both the indicated and pumping works.…”

“…Wave motion across the chamber was successfully resolved and compared with theoretical cylinder modes. However, no realistic initial flow field or combustion model were used, 23 introducing instead small regions of high pressure simulating the ignition points. More recent studies 24,25 included realistic flow conditions and combustion modeling in the loop.…”
