Assessing the Need for and Constraints to Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Integration in the Teaching and Learning of Tourism at Higher Education Institutions in Kenya

Abstract: The aim of the current paper is to provide an extensive review of the theoretical and empirical literature that justifies the need for Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in the teaching and learning of tourism in the Kenyan institutions of higher learning. Further, a review of existing constraints is also explained using the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) which has proved to be a suitable theoretical model in helping to explain and predict user behaviour of information technology and subsequentl… Show more

“…The students welcomed the video-making assignment, similar to the findings of Yeh (2018), in which the students became more involved in the learning process and better understood the target culture. The above responses also revealed that the activities adopted in this study benefitted the students by increasing interaction and collaboration, as promoted by Kinyanjui (2019), and providing a learnercentered approach, as emphasized by Inoue and Bell (2006) and He et al (2019). These results echo the needs raised by Balula et al (2019) and Patiar et al (2017) to integrate ICT with professional developments in tourism and hospitality education.…”

“…Previous research (Patiar et al, 2017;Tavakoli & Wijesinghe, 2019) have likewise shown patronage to the integration of digital literacies in tourism and hospitality education. The use of ICTs has complemented the current teaching pedagogy by helping to realize a more learner-centered approach (Inoue & Bell, 2006), with which students are able to develop critical thinking skills, problem-solving skills, and people skills through collaboration (Kinyanjui, 2019), all of which are important aptitudes for a tourism and hospitality professional.…”

“…This confirms the findings of a number of other studies (Yılmaz & Karataş, 2022), which found that problems associated with the quantity or quality of the requisite online resources may prompt student drop out. The lack of adequate resources in developing countries is well documented (Kaisara & Bwalya, 2021;Kinyanjui, 2019;Maketo, 2018;Van de Heyde & Siebrits, 2019). Namibia is one of the most unequal countries in the world, and extreme poverty means that access to resources such as data and ICT devices is particularly difficult for some segments of the community.…”

“…Therefore, though ICT has diversified how students acquire knowledge and skills, Chisango et al (2020) argued that its usage as a teaching strategy has aided in a deeper understanding of what is taught through developing problem-solving capabilities. Furthermore, according to Kinyanjui (2019) and Mwapwele et al (2019), empirical evidence abounds on how ICT has had positive impacts on students and teachers in the teaching learning process. In support of this assertion, Asongu and Tchamyou (2020) aver that, in developed countries, ICT has been adopted to make teaching processes very convenient for all categories of students irrespective of their physical capabilities or challenges.…”
