This field study elaborates the role of grass swale in the management of stormwater in an urban parking lot. Grass swale was constructed by using different vegetations and local soil media in the parking lot of Mapu-gu Seoul, Korea. In this study, rainfall runoff was first retained in soil and the vegetation layers of the grass swale, and then infiltrated rainwater was collected with the help of underground perforated pipe, and passed to an underground storage trench. In this way, grass swale detained a large amount of rainwater for a longer period of time and delayed peak discharge. In this field study, various real storm events were monitored and the research results were analyzed to evaluate the performance of grass swale for managing rainfall runoff in an urban area. From the analysis of field experiments, grass swale showed the significant rainfall runoff retention in different rain events. Grass swale markedly reduced total rainfall runoff volume and peak flow during the small storm events of intensity about 30 mm/h. From the analysis, on average rainfall runoff retention from the grass swale was found around 40 to 75% during the various small rain events. From the results, we can say that grass swale is a stormwater mitigation practice which can help avoid flash flooding problems in urban areas.

Green infrastructures can provide multiple benefits and play an important role in cities' resilience to extreme stormwater events caused by climate change. Additionally, these techniques can contribute to the protection of transport infrastructures, averting major environmental and economical adversities. Stormwater can be treated through several processes, some processes being more effective than others for specific contaminants. A review of some of the most commonly used GI for stormwater management in urban environments was carried out, with emphasis on their efficiency in reducing peak flow rates, runoff volumes and the following pollutants: total suspended solids, heavy metals, total phosphorus and total nitrogen. The GI studied were green roofs, bioretention systems, filter strips, vegetated swales and trenches. In addition to the advantages in the urban water cycle, benefits of amenity and ecosystem services of these GI have also been identified. The discussion of the results and the comparative analysis of GI performance were carried out taking advantage of a table that summarizes the range of percentages of GI efficiency obtained in the various studies for the different functions.

Deux noues végétalisées ont été mises en œuvre au sein d'un pilote au CSTB (Nantes), et ont été équipées d'un simulateur de ruissellement et d'une instrumentation dédiée afin d'en étudier leurs réponses hydraulique et épuratoire. La fonctionnalité de la chaîne de mesure et la reproductibilité des réponses des noues ont été évaluées sur un même évènement de ruissellement (pluie d'environ 11 mm), simulé à 6 reprises entre novembre 2017 et avril 2018. Le dispositif instrumental s'est avéré apte à restituer intégralement la réponse hydraulique des deux noues, et sa capacité à suivre finement les flux de polluants en entrée et en sortie de noue a été validée. Les valeurs brutes des ratios flux d'eau sortant/injecté (S/E) et flux d'eau infiltré/ruisselé (I) sont faiblement dispersées (coefficients de variation (cv) < 5 %). Les abattements en masse et en concentration des deux polluants analysés dans cette étude, le zinc (Zn) et le cuivre (Cu), sont compris dans les limites de reproductibilité calculées. En revanche, le niveau de contamination élevé de Zn dans les eaux injectées pourrait expliquer la plus faible dispersion de son abattement (cv < 30 %) par rapport à Cu (−185 % ≤ cv ≤ 176 %). Enfin, les incertitudes liées à la mesure et aux méthodes analytiques ont été identifiées comme des sources potentielles de variations des réponses. Ces résultats seraient à approfondir pour des conditions initiales plus contrastées (pluies extrêmes, sol sec ou proche de la saturation).
