Background Understanding the dependence of ecological land and dynamics of the human-nature-coupled landscape is crucial for urban ecosystem resilience. In this study, we characterized and compared the Spatio-temporal responses of ecological land to urban landscape dynamics in Bahir Dar, Addis Ababa, Adama, and Hawassa cities in Ethiopia for the last three decades (1990–2020). Three sets of Landsat satellite images, field observations, and urban land indexes were used to produce landscape maps and geo-spatial data analysis. Results The results showed that in all cities ecological land has had changed intensely during 1990–2020 regarding its quantity, and spatial pattern. Besides, the substantial expansion of built-up ecosystems was manifested at the cost of ecological land. The built-up ecosystem was augmented by 17,341.0 ha (32.16%), 2151.27 ha (19.64%), 2715.21 ha (12.21%), and 2599.65 ha (15.71%) for Addis Ababa, Adama, Bahir Dar, and Hawassa cities respectively from 1990 to 2020 periods. A total of 40.97% of the prolonged built-up area was obtained from urban agricultural land alone. Moreover, urban sprawl is likely to continue, which will be outweighed by the loss of the open space ecosystem. The finding also confirmed the value of land-use intensity (LUI) of Addis Ababa (3.31), Bahir Dar (3.56), Hawassa (4.82), Adama (5.04) was augmented parallel with accelerated growth in the built-up ecosystems. Besides, the Integrated land-use dynamics degree (ILUDD) analysis confirmed that the spatial pattern of ecological land loss significantly consistent with LUI in all cities. Conclusion Land-use intensity (LUI) dynamics pattern was followed by urban ecological land to the multi-complex human-dominance ecosystem with a substantial influence on urban greenery and ecosystem services provides. Thus, in all cities, the implementation of effective ecological land management and urban planning policies are required to ensure economic development and ecosystem resilience.

The objective of this study was assess the status of ecosystem service values (ESVs) due to changes in land use and land cover (LULC) in the Beles River Basin of Ethiopia to establish the scientific basis for the actionable needs for enhancing the conservation and sustainable use of ecosystem functions. Satellite images of Landsat 5TM (1986), 7ETM+(2002), and 8OLI-TIRS (2019) were used to evaluate the LULC changes over the years. All images were classified using supervised classification technique of a Maximum Likelihood Algorithm (MLA). Accuracy assessments were performed for each reference year. The LULC types were classified with overall accuracy ranging from 89.3–92.1% with Kappa coefficient of 0.87 to 0.9. The classification result indicated a reduction of forests (71.0%), woodlands (11.2%), and grazing lands (1.8%) conversely, an increase of croplands (3568.0%), water bodies (178.1%), and built-up areas (9.4%) over the past 34 years. The total ESVs in the basin were estimated to be US$ 1,085 billion in 1986, US$ 909.4 million in 2002, and US$ 836.5 million in 2019. The percentage losses of ESVs were 22.9% (US$ 249.3 million) over the past three decades. Individual ecosystem service functions, such as erosion control, climate regulation, nutrient cycling, and water treatment, which were among the largest contributors to total ESVs, have also linearly decreased on their values. In contrary, the value of food production ecosystem service function increased dramatically. We conclude that the decline in ESVs evidences the effects of environmental degradation in the basin. Thus, we recommend further studies of sustainable land management (SLM) options that could ensure sustainable ecosystem services in the basin.

Increasing demand for food production results in Land use and land cover (LULC) changes, which afflicts the provision of ecosystem services in high mountain areas. This work used time-series LULC and selected spatial metrics to predict the LULC changes for Kikafu-Weruweru-Karanga (KWK) watershed (on the southern slopes of Mt. Kilimanjaro) for the next decade. LULC maps were generated by classifying time-series satellite images. We further predicted the implications for selected staple crop production over the next decade. The simulated LULC shows expansion in built-up (by 32.55%/27.04 km 2 ) and agriculture (by 39.52%/52.0 km 2 ) areas from 2018 to 2030. These results suggest that urbanization is likely the next biggest threat to water availability and food production. Grasslands and wetlands are expected to decrease by 57.24% and 39.29%, respectively. The forest area is likely to shrink by 6.37%, about 9.82 km 2 , and 1.26 km 2 being converted to agriculture and built-up areas, respectively. However, expansion in agricultural land shows very little increase in staple food crop production records, suggesting that farm size plays a minor role in increasing crop production. Predicting the near future LULC around KWK is useful for evaluating the likelihood of achieving development and conservation targets that are set locally, nationally and internationally.
