This paper analyses the influence of different types of El Niño‐Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events on South American precipitation under a climate change scenario. We use two sub‐selections of Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5) models that have a good representation of teleconnections to the region, albeit with reduced magnitude anomalies. Comparing historical simulations and the RCP 8.5 scenario experiments, after removing the trend in the mean due climate change, the sub‐ensemble means show similar global sea surface temperature anomalies and South American precipitation anomaly patterns in the future. No robust changes in the pattern or magnitude of precipitation anomalies are found, despite significant ENSO‐related shifts in the Pacific basin, as highlighted in other studies. However, if the models are analysed individually, some show relatively strong changes in ENSO‐related precipitation anomalies for both canonical and Modoki events. We show that, in individual models, tropical teleconnection changes associated with ENSO are primarily driven by changes in the magnitude of ENSO‐related circulation but with no agreement on the sign. Increases in background moisture, which have been hypothesized to drive an intensification of ENSO‐related precipitation anomalies, are of secondary importance.

RESUMENEl objetivo principal de este estudio es analizar las tendencias en el caudal de los ríos de Ecuador. Para este fin, se han utilizado los datos de caudal de la red de estaciones hidrológicas, proporcionados por el Instituto Nacional de Meteorología e Hidrología de Ecuador (IHNAMI), distribuidas en el territorio ecuatoriano y situadas estratégicamente en las cuencas de los principales ríos. Se seleccionó un número de 26 estaciones con disponibilidad de datos diarios sin discontinuidad durante el período de 51 años . Mediante el test de Man-Kendall y pendiente de Sen, se han evaluado las tendencias del caudal a escala mensual. Por último, se analiza la relación entre la variabilidad del caudal y el ENSO, fuente principal de variabilidad climática en la región.Palabras clave: Ecuador, caudal, tendencias, variabilidad estacional. ASTRACTThe main objective of this study is to analyze trends in the streamflow of the rivers of Ecuador. For this end, we use the streamflow data from the network of hydrological stations, provided by the Instituto Nacional de Meteorología e Hidrología de Ecuador (IHNAMI), distributed over the Ecuadorian territory and strategically located in the watersheds of its main rivers. A number of 26 stations with a continuous period of daily data during 51 years period was selected. Trends of the streamflow rates have been evaluated at monthly time scales using Man-Kendall test and Sens slope. To examine how precipitation patterns and climate change impact feeding choices made by a population of critically endangered cotton-top tamarins (Saguinus oedipus), we examined 22 years of feeding data (1999-2020) from 21 groups collected at Parque Natural Regional Bosque Seco El Ceibal Mono Tití in Santa Catalina, Colombia. We describe the diet and examine the role of seasonal rainfall and annual variation in rainfall on diet. Rainfall is highly seasonal (mean annual rainfall 1562 mm [range 940-2680 mm]) with a dry, early rainy, and late rainy season in each year. Over 80 species of plants formed part of the fruit, nectar, and exudate components of the diet. Fruits, although available year-round, were more commonly available and consumed during the late rainy seasons (August-November). Exudates were consumed more frequently in the dry season (December-March) and invertebrate consumption was stable across the year. Nectar feeding from a single species (Combretum fruticosum) peaked in November. Rainfall varied over the years, with 13 years exceeding the 99% confidence intervals for mean rainfall. Ten of these extreme years (both drought and extremely wet) occurred in the last 11 years. Fruit consumption did not vary between extreme and average years, but cotton-top tamarins consumed more invertebrates and exudates in wet years. Presently, cottontop tamarins appear to be able to cope with these extreme variations in rainfall due to their highly varied diet. However, the forests that these primates depend upon for survival are threatened by human exploitation making it critically important to maintain a generalist feeding strategy for survival as many fruiting trees that compose a large proportion of the diet are removed. As conservation efforts continue, plant species consumed by cotton-top tamarins provide useful data when selecting species for habitat restoration programs.
