Assessing the Exergy Costs of a 332-MW Pulverized Coal-Fired Boiler

Abstract: Abstract:In this paper, we analyze the exergy costs of a real large industrial boiler with the aim of improving efficiency. Specifically, the 350-MW front-fired, natural circulation, single reheat and balanced draft coal-fired boiler forms part of a 1050-MW conventional power plant located in Spain. We start with a diagram of the power plant, followed by a formulation of the exergy cost allocation problem to determine the exergy cost of the product of the boiler as a whole and the expenses of the individual co… Show more

“…Using the method, the work potential and energy efficiency of the system can be calculated [18][19][20][21][22]. Therefore, it is widely used in power system design and boiler improvement [23][24][25][26][27]. Shi [28] determined the boiler efficiency from soot blowing and proposed a superior model to improve the boiler performance.…”

“…Abdelmotalib et al remarked that due to very complicated processes, which occur in the fluidized bed combustors, it is difficult to cover all aspects of heat transfer [ 9 ]. Therefore some additional, auxiliary data, e.g., to adjust parameters or to solve complex differential equations are necessary, and even other assumptions should be made to get a trackable solution [ 33 , 34 , 35 , 36 , 37 , 38 ]. As an example, Zhou et al pointed out that simulations conducted on the platform of FLUENT 12 software with three processors parallel for 70 s with the number of meshes nearly 8500 costs nearly 60 days [ 15 , 39 ].…”

“…There are some studies about coal-fired boilers [7][8][9][10]. Figure 1 shows a schematic of a coal-fired oxy-fuel boiler [11], in which oxygen is first separated from the air and then mixed with a stream of recycled flue gases from the boiler.…”
