“…Studies with a main focus on habitat protection assessed the effectiveness of these protected areas among other aims, such as preventing habitat destruction and protecting endangered wildlife (Clerici et al, 2007; Foo & Numata, 2019; Huang et al, 2019; Merkohasanaj et al, 2019; Onojeghuo & Onojeghuo, 2015; Simons‐Legaard et al, 2018; Sunderland‐Groves et al, 2011; Xie et al, 2012).…”

“…Outstanding approaches used changes over time to the mountainous timberline as an indicator (Lutz et al, 2013) or species distribution models (Sunderland‐Groves et al, 2011; Westwood et al, 2019). Indicators for marine protected areas were species habitat distribution models using topographical characteristics and assemblages of animals (Friedlander et al, 2007; Merkohasanaj et al, 2019).…”

“…The efficacy of protection of marine reserves typically has been evaluated through the estimation of changes in abundance (biomass) of populations, recruit–adult and prey–predator relationships, individual spatial behaviour, and community assemblages (Russ et al, 2004; Coleman, Palner‐Brodie & Kelaher, 2013; McGilliard et al, 2017; Paul, Kar & Ghorai, 2018; Rees et al, 2018; Merkohasanaj et al, 2019; Rojas‐Nazar et al, 2019; Kiggins et al, 2020; Medrano et al, 2020; Mello et al, 2020; Ramírez‐González et al, 2020; Salayo et al, 2020; Villegas‐Ríos et al, 2021). In this regard, the present contribution is the first attempt to quantify the efficacy of the creation of Reserva Nacional de Islas, Islotes y Puntas Guaneras on the most conspicuous, commercial and related benthic species inhabiting the coastal area of Punta Coles , using pre‐image population analysis (PPA) developed by Levins (2000) and Levins, Awerbuch & Park (2013) and extended by Ortiz (2018).…”

“…In the particular case of avoiding overfishing, several types of management tools have been implemented to reduce the loss of biodiversity, increasing the health of marine ecosystems and even landings. Within these management tools, the most popular is the designation of marine protected areas (MPAs) for multiple uses, including the strict no‐take and partial marine reserves and territorial use rights for fisheries, among others (Agardy, Notarbartolo di Sciara & Christie, 2011; Coleman, Palner‐Brodie & Kelaher, 2013; Afflerbach et al, 2014: Roberts et al, 2017; Bucaram et al, 2018; Merkohasanaj et al, 2019; Dwyer et al, 2020; Kiggins et al, 2020; Manson et al, 2021). In general terms, it is widely accepted that MPAs have shown their effectiveness for having positive impacts on marine conservation by increasing biodiversity and recovering overexploited species, communities and habitats (Lester et al, 2009; Fenberg et al, 2012; Wing & Jack, 2013; Roberts et al, 2017; Wilson et al, 2020).…”
