Assessing the effectiveness of flying ad hoc networks for international border surveillance

Abstract: International border security operations are diverse and include tasks to facilitate the legitimate movement of goods, thwart crime, maintain safety around borders and safeguard natural resources. All these operations are vital and enduring; however, three operations are currently of exceptional concern to countries around the world: counterterrorism, illegal drug control and illegal migration. The usage of flying ad hoc networks promises new ways for both military and civilian applications, such as border sur… Show more

“…The findings of the presented work which was based on simulation only reveal that teamwork produces better results than when simply UAVs are used. In [16], the technological capabilities of existing and emerging surveillance systems utilized for international border monitoring applications are investigated. It discusses the efficacy of these systems as well as the technological infrastructure needed to deploy them.…”

“…Satellite imagery also forms a key part of the 'smart border' agenda, which attempt to use modern technology to improve border management around the world and track 'illegal' crossings. Systems relying on remote sensing were developed "to assist border authorities with more effective surveillance and reliable decision-making support" (Al Fayez et al, 2019). In contrast, civil society organizations use the same technology to monitor deaths and violations of migrants' rights at the maritime borders of the EU.…”

“…Nowadays, UAV technology brings the attention of researchers, scientists, and academicians from all over the world starting from military to other applications, such as commercial, health, private uses, sports, ground target detection (Yuan et al, 2019), smart cities (Gupta et al, 2020; Mohamed et al, 2020) construction, education, entertainment, managing wildfire (Barrado et al, 2010), environment, meteorology (Sun et al, 2019), traffic monitoring (Wang et al, 2019a), astronomy, agriculture, remote sensing (Padró et al, 2019), tacking, rescue and search operation (Kanzaki & Akagi, 2019; Singhal et al, 2021), disaster monitoring (Miyano et al, 2019), disaster relief operation (Sánchez‐García et al, 2019), and border surveillance (Al Fayez et al, 2019; Bein et al, 2015). UAVs have illustrated their ability to deal with some of the human beings' most difficult tasks, like, natural catastrophes (38 Ways Drones Will Impact Society: From Fighting War to Forecasting Weather, UAVs Change Everything, 2020).…”
