Assessing the ecological status of candidate reference lakes in Ireland using palaeolimnology

Abstract: Summary1. The European Union (EU) Water Framework Directive (WFD) requires that member states establish type-specific reference conditions for all waterbodies, including freshwater lakes. This presents a problem in those locations where human activity has resulted in significant changes to the biological, chemical and physical characteristics of waterbodies. 2. Seventy-six oligotrophic and meso-oligotrophic [0 -19 µ g total phosphorus (TP) L ] lakes thought to be relatively unimpacted by human activity have be… Show more

“…Unlike rivers, lakes have the benefit of a sedimentary record that can be used to establish historical conditions directly (e.g., Bennion et al 2004, Bennion and or can be used to assess whether lakes have undergone change in response to pressures, such as eutrophication, and thereby to identify those lakes that might be considered as reference sites (e.g., Leira et al 2006). For the purpose of developing the LTDI, 35, 13, and 7 reference sites were identified for LA, MA and HA lake types, respectively.…”

“…Other investigators have used paleolimnology to assess reference status. In Ireland, Leira et al (2006) found that 68% of candidate reference lakes showed important deviations from reference condition resulting from acidification and nutrient enrichment. Similar analyses by Bennion et al (2004) in Scotland showed that 19 of 26 lochs had historical increases in total P of .5 mg/L.…”

“…Moreover, a critical question is whether the nineteenth century is the most appropriate period to use as a reference point. Several studies have questioned this; especially in areas which have suffered long-term human impact (Renberg et al 1993b;Andersen et al 2004;Leira et al 2006), and the importance of long-term perspectives in defining reference conditions has been stressed by Willis and Birks (2006). Several paleolimnological studies have already demonstrated extensive human impacts in the nineteenth century, through agriculture, mining and forestry activities, as well as from air pollution (Brännvall 2000;Ek 2000;Korsman 1993).…”
