Assessing the development of mental fatigue during simulated flights with concurrent EEG-fNIRS measurement

Abstract: Mental fatigue (MF) can impair pilots’ performance and reactions to unforeseen events and is therefore an important concept within aviation. The physiological measurement of MF, especially with EEG and, in recent years, fNIRS, has gained much attention. However, a systematic investigation and comparison of the measurements is seldomly done. We induced MF via time on task during a 90-min simulated flight task and collected concurrent EEG-fNIRS, performance and self-report data from 31 participants. While their … Show more

“…Mental fatigue is experienced by almost everyone at one time or another, especially among workers who are sleep-deprived [ 1 ] and those whose work involves sustained attention such as pilots [ 2 ] and long haul drivers [ 3 , 4 ]. Many persons with traumatic brain injury [ 5 ], systemic lupus erythematosus [ 6 ], inflammatory bowel disease [ 7 ] and multiple sclerosis (MS) [ 8 ] feel mental fatigue unceasingly which disrupts work productivity and quality of life.…”

“…CF poses a significant concern as it can lead to errors, impaired performance in daily activities, decreased efficiency, motivation loss, and an increased risk of accidents (Fithriyyah, et al, 2020). The terminology and definitions used to describe CF widely vary throughout the literature (Hamann & Carstengerdes , 2023).…”
