Assessing the determinants of rice farmers' adaptation strategies to climate change in Bangladesh

Abstract: Purpose: This paper examines rice farmers' selection of adaptation strategies to cope with and offset the effects of climate change and the determinants of those selections in Rajshahi, a severely drought-prone district of Bangladesh. Findings:Results from the MNL model indicate that gender, age, education of household heads, household assets, annual farm income, farm size, tenure status, farmer-to-farmer extension, access to credit, access to subsidy, and access to electricity, all affect farmers' selection … Show more

“…K. Hasan et al, 2018;Szabo et al, 2016b). There has also been some investigation into the factors correlated with agricultural adaptation in the context of a changing environment (Anik et al, 2018;Habiba et al, 2012;Sarker et al, 2013). These studies, along with our findings, point toward the need for implementation research that assesses socio-economic circumstances as mediating factors for adaptation uptake and food security.…”

“…Before the model is run, all the hypothesized independent variables were tested for multicollinearity using the variance inflation factor (VIF). We found the VIFs of the independent variables were below 10 (1.09-2.03), indicating that there is no issue of multicollinearity [35].…”

“…Multinomial probit and logit models are the two commonly used regression models when there are more than two dependent variables and the dependent variables are unordered and categorical [35,36]. We chose the Multinomial Logit (MNL) model over the probit model for this study because: (1) It gives more precise parameter estimation [37]; (2) It estimates the likelihood of adoption of non-reference categories against a reference (base) category in terms of relative risk ratio (RRR) [36];…”

“…Thus, a better understanding of existing adaptation patterns is essential for development of adaptation policies (Abid et al 2019). In addition, several empirical studies on determinants of farm-level adaptations indicate that the educational background, gender, age of household head, household capital, landholding, tenure status, experience of farming, livestock ownership, credit availability, social capital, and regional climate influence farmers' adaptations (Al-Hassan 2013;Ashraf et al 2014;Deressa et al 2009;Hassan and Nhemachena 2008;Piya et al 2013;Sarker et al 2009;Tesfahunegn et al 2016).…”
