Assessing the best-order for business process model refactoring

Abstract: Quality assurance is one of the most critical activities in business process models which are obtained by reverse engineering, e.g., from existing information systems. Companies must deal with several quality faults in business process models such as irrelevant elements, fine-grain granularity or incompleteness, which affect understandability and modifiability of business process models. Hence, business process refactoring techniques are often used to improve these features, which change the internal structure… Show more

“…4.4.5.3 Refactoring More theoretical and practical discussions than empirical studies address model refactoringthat is, replacing ''process model fragments [with] semantically equivalent ones'' to achieve higher quality and understandability of models (Fernández-Ropero et al 2013, p. 1397. In principle, model refactoring lowers the intrinsic cognitive load in understanding a process model without changing the process's behavior.…”

“… Optimize the business process structure (e.g., [36])the business process model is analysed in order to define deadlocks, synchronization possibilities, and cycles, to exclude trivial activities, to change the granularity level of the process, and other similar purposes. This type of analysis is possible in cases where the business process is described with formal mathematical methods.…”

“…Business process models derived via the reverse engineering approach followed by MARBLE TM often require some refinement before they can be utilised for further transformations. For such purposes the IBUPROFEN (Improvement and BUsiness Processes Refactoring OF Embedded Noise) approach has been developed, which introduces a set of algorithms for the refactoring of business process models expressed in BPMN [32]. It introduces a set of ten refactoring algorithms which can be applied on business process models represented by graphs, expressed in BPMN.…”
